I'm thinking of grabbing a pair of these off ebay. How would the K501 treat me coming from a SR60?

I don't know what your gear is but they do sound very good although not as technically proficient as the phones I own. However in order for the K501 to shine you absolutely need a good amp. They are by far the hardest to drive dynamic headphone I've used.

And by difference you mean improvement, yes?

The K501 is what first made me fall in love with AKG, and anybody who's been around here any amount of time knows the rest.

Yes, the K-501 is special.  The K-1000 is better, but the K-501 is what lead me down the path to being an AKG fan.  I wish AKG produced something as good today; that is what pushedme towards the Sennheiser camp.

actually, the bass gets a bit annoying cause the impact makes the rest drown out, but all the rest is definately improvement to my ears, taking my palms off it's like i am in a huge tube (kind of). I am thinking about recabling since me cable has been destroyed by rats. What are good  economic options for the k501, looking for an upgrade over the stock cable ofcourse.

After all these years with the K501, which is has been your preferred headphone amp and what has been your preferred amp signature? I got a K501 lying here and quite like it. May as well find out what worked best for you and why...

Try it with the Objective 2 amp, the O2 amp worked wonders for the DT48, bass is now more refined, I'm also planning on getting a K501 soon. Will definitely bring the O2 amp for the audition before buying.

I use my K501 on my V200 and Auditor mostly. The sound more open on the Auditor but also warmer on the V200...The Auditor and V200 power them perfectly well enough for me

What is best amp for K501? I would have possibility to buy either Lehmann Rhinelander or Little Dot MK III. Which one is better? My other headphones include Grado SR-80 and Yuin PK1 but this amp is mainly for AKG.

I can't comment on the particular amps, but you'll need lots of power to drive them..

I used to have a MF V8 + little pinkie PSU which worked very well with the 501, now I use Grace M902..

This thread made me buy the K501. 3 years later I come back and it still puts the smile on my face.

I pair K501 with Apogee Duet and this combo really shines. It's the keeper after other headphones come and go. I use it for almost everything: from blues, classic rock, metal to jazz/fusion. I have a K550 on order but I will definitely keep the K501.
