Okay so  I have been in the market for a nice pair of closed headphones for a while and have done a decent amount of research to cut done my choices. I will not be using any amp at all ever, my devices are Hp pavilion, Samsung tab 10.1, and htc evo. My main question is how do the 272s sound un amped? I know the A900s are really good un amped but haven't found any thing saying if the 272s are driveable  un amped. also would the akg 242s be easy to drive unamped or are the a900s my best bet unamped?
thank you.

Hi again BotByte, we seem to be on a lot of the same threads.

OP: Can't say whether A900 or K272 is better unamped, I can only say that both ran fine out of my iPod.
Also, you do know that the K242 is open right?

He asked a basic question, I answered basic

I'm surprised your Ipod could push the

Either way, it's best that the A900 to be pushed without and the K272 push with because it's not a question of power but how mush of it

Yes you can run the K272 upamped. And they sound fine. But there is a small top grain that distorts as the volume is raised. But the source could be that too.

I just went for the best possible choice without playing a gamble and went A900 since they run as well as a Grado unamped

BotByte: I wasn't saying there was anything wrong with your answer, just noting the coincidence that we're on many of the same threads is all.

Wow thank you for the responses everyone, I really didn't think it would get this much attention. I heard the 242 were "semi open" but they dont appeal to me as much as the other two do despite the cheap price of $130 (compared to the 272s and a900s price of $190).

So my next question is would it be worth it to get something cheap like this down the road and would it make a noticable improvement:
http://www.chawstons.com/product_info.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=889&c=01&i=B001P9EQH8

And are the different specs going to make a difference
A900:  5-40k
K272:  16-28k
will those specs be reconizable assuming all my music is 320kbs?

And also if anyone does have a pair (is that the right term? lol) of K272s could you say how they sound unamped? thanks everyone

Those specs need a bit of context. In particular, what can the human ear hear?
Answer: 20 Hz - 20 KHz

Both headphones are therefore claimed to reproduce the entire spectrum of audible frequencies. The extra frequencies are not useless, however: low frequencies are felt, e.g. the rumble you might feel from an explosion in a movie, or the unsettling tones played to increase tension in scary movies.

At the end of the day, however, specs do not tell a complete picture.
