After doing research, I decided that AKG K271 would be the best headphone for me in my price range. So I orderd a new pair and when I got it, it appeared used cosmetically. Because of that I listened to it for about 20 minutes and returned. I ordered another pair from a different place and this time everything looked brand new but it sounds somewhat different from the previous one. Compared to the other one, the new one has a smaller soundstage as well as having slightly less detail and clarity. With the same songs, I was getting goosebumps before but not with the new one. Could it be that the other one was a customer return which was already burned in? Does K271 change drastically after burn in? Also, I do not notice much difference between unamped and amped with G&W TW-J1.

Memories about audio are notoriously unreliable.
AKG is notoriously unreliable as well, but less so. The 'phones might be different under the hood somehow.

As to amps, they should sound the same if they are not deliberately coloured and if they both are beefy enough (voltage, current, caps, whatever).

I've been poking around researching the AKG line simply for their swish looks, and I have to say the general consensus is that AKGs NEED burn-in to sound anywhere near enjoyable, and are mediocre otherwise. A new AKG sounds comparable to some cheap bundle pairs, but once you clock in 'round fifty hours, some voodoo plays in and they become, well, what you paid for. Then again, i've never owned a pair myself and am just going off of what others have reviewed/stated/insulted with theirs, so take that with a grain of salt.

Why spread dubious information if you've never even heard a pair? Don't buy the hype, Paul. Burn-in never has so strong an effect as to be indisputable. I'm pretty sure I've heard it happen myself, but night and day it's not.
