looking to upgrade my Audio Technica ATH-A900, I'm between the AKG K 242 vs the AKG K 272.  I was going to buy the K 242 because of the semi-open design but  willing to spend 85$ more on the K 272. believe  because of the price that the 272 is better deal than the 242.

any advice?

will be using it with a Matrix "mini-i" Balanced DAC

For me K271S was a HUGE upgrade from A900 mostly because of the sucked out mids on A900. Never learned to like K702 and sold them off but still enjoying K271.

Neither is an upgrade to the A900. From AKG, you should get at least the Q701/K550 to be a substantial improvement IMO.

The Q701 would be a good choice, but it is more of what I like to call a slantgrade. A half way point between and upgrade and a side grade.

The Q701s would be good, but before you do that, I would actually say to maybe get better audio equipment like a dedicated dac and amp (that is assuming you don't already have one of course).

As for headphones go, a true upgrade would be something like getting into a pair of HE-400s or 500s. Maybe even some sennheiser 650s.

If the K272 sounds oike the K271, then I will recommend the K242HD anytime. They have much better bass and clarity.
