I called headroom thursday to purchase these and i was told they were discontinued.is this correct?

Yes they were expensive to make for the low amount they were selling. Probably because when most people buy headphones they're buying headphones not earspeakers. But this thread is going to be very long, with much speculation. I'm in for the long ride

It is worth finding a used nor NOS pair of K1000s, but you need to be ready to upgrade the cabling and find an appropriate amplifier to drive them.

This is an expensive and time-consuming activity, but one can deliver the finest in headphone reproduction of classical and opera. The detail, nuance, power and soundstage of the K1000s is IMHO just about as good as it gets for classical and opera.

I'm not sure I agree about the cable upgrade, since I don't find my K1000s harsh in the highs at all with the stock cable. I also don't think it's really THAT crucial to find a NOS pair, since AKG still has drivers in stock, and you can easily replace every part of the headphone including drivers, cables, temple pads, headband, etc. So I don't think it's worth the time and the effort to find a NOS pair, it's much easier to find a pair in decent condition and replace the parts that you don't like at your own convenience.

Which is a damn shame, since they are the best dynamic headphones on the planet when properly amplified - IMHO. I recently completed my will, which states for me to be buried with the K1000s.

So in theory, could someone build their own AKG K1000?

The designer of the AKG K1000s sold his soul to the devil in order to acquire the blueprints for the K1000s. When he died and went to hell as a result, he took the plans for the K1000s along with him. We will not see a design as amazing as the K1000s for a very, very long time (if ever).

Even HE90 and Omega II can't touch K1000 for classical if you ask me.
But my guess is that AKG finished selling their last batch of K1000 and don't want to make another.

Thanks God that is just IYHO, !!!!.....I do have heard a lot better sound out of a headphone system, just FYI...and by a good margin...all depends on the preference of the listener

I'm also of the belief/speculation that the K1000s are the best in dynamic headphones; fortunately moderately soon I'll probably be hearing the MDR-R10, ATH-L3000, and Qualia 010 to make sure I don't change my mind. We shall see!
