I see now, from Meier:

The K601 strongly resembles the K701 but has a slightly harder hitting treble. It's a very comfortable headphone.
These headphones are very inefficient and for sure need an amplifier to deliver adequate sound levels.

Exactly. Just because I think the K501 is a bit lacking in the low end hardly makes it unworthy. It's a beautiful sounding headphone. I used them with several amps, and listened to them for several weeks. It was tough to part with them. If these 701s can fill out the low end a bit better without loosing control of everything else, I'll be ecstatic.

As for amplification, I have plenty of balls and beef on tap.

I don't think these terms apply to the real thing

Has anyone listened to the k601 with 60ohm added impedance and compared it to the k701?

I think you guys know what I'm getting at and maybe they won't sound similar, but what if they do?

Except that there's nothing bloated or slow in 650s bass.

IMO compared to the K501, it's fair to call many headphone's bass bloated and/or slow. Only in comparison to the K501 though, not to real life. K501 has bass like a pair of monitor speakers with small woofers, and frankly I find the DT880 more accurate in the bass region and thus better for classical music. I like K501 better for new age, folk/world music and jazz, also any recording that may have more-than-desirable bass.

IMHO they are not neutral/accurate in the bass region, they are rolled off in low bass (in a good way, that is very coherent with the rest of the presentation). Never thought I would like a bass-shy headphone, but I do like the K501. One of these days though, I'll pick up a PPA amp with bass boost and probably enjoy them even more.

I agree, there is no way that the HD650 bass is bloated, and slow. It's just pure quality!!

Do I notice some sarcasm in this comment?

My comment is true. Everyone should hear 650s paired up with RP5.1.

Agree, the HD650s bass (and mid-bass) is surely present, but not bloated or slow, at least not with any "decent" amplification.

That is true even independently of amplification, I say. My 650's don't seem to know what the heck "slow and bloated" is about...

Seriously, I can't see how such a lifelike texturing a bass drum has with the 650 could involve "slow and bloated". The 595's bass can seem tighter/drier/quicker -- yet bass lines have slightly less definition to them, so.
