I heard these are different sounding cans .

I only tried k100 , i found them very warm and deep in the bass section , lacking in mids and highs - very good cans for price .

Does anyone tried these cans ? How about they're purpose - neutrality ?

I just can buy 301 - 301extra - 401 for bargain .

How do they sound after breaking in ?
- I think akg phones really need a long break in period .

never heard the K301.

the K301xtra : very thin sound, lacking any warmth and involvement.

the K401 : we're getting somewhere. The little brother of the K501 is pretty similar to its big brother. In short, nice soft sound, a bit light in the bass, delicate trebble (not very, very extended though) and sweet midrange. A soundstage to die for. Comfort is really great.

As you can't get a free meal, the cans need a serious output jack to shine. Compared to the K501, the bass is a bit more boomy and the highest notes have some etchiness. The construction is not as good too.

I feel that the K401 is about 95% of the K501. A cable change will affect the K501 more than the K401. The build quality is a little higher on the K501 (the band); everything else is the same.

I did and I think wally too.

The K501 is not really worth to buy on lower end stuff. The improvments are indeed kinda marginalover the K401.

It won't be easy to swap the cable. You'll probably have to solder a bit.

PS : btw, Neruda made a great review of the K401; it's in the featured reviews in the sub-forum.

boodi,

when I look at J-Curve's frequency response curve (and you can do a search for the K301) I just can't see how they would sound good.

Yes, I own both. I prefer the K501 by a slight margin, and that's because it sounds better modded than the K401 modded. Otherwise they are real close (in their stock configuration).

You may want to forego a cable swap. The stock cable is very thin and light and long. What you will need is a really good amp as it is of a high impedance and in-efficient.

No, it does not have thunderous bass. But it does have a very well balance overall tonal range. For DVD movie watching I add about 2 to 3 dB at about 80 to 100 Hz. It becomes quite enjoyable without drowning out the all important vocal midrange.

You can usually pick up a used K401 for about $50 in the head-Fi for sale section.

As far as break in, I never noticed nor bothered. They sound good right out of the box.

i think they fit my needs ( and now I'm really curious on sound differences between these cans and the k501 model )

..and now I am going to spend some other money for an amp capable of driving them well

Not recently, the time I did hear a pair of 501s it was running off a portable cd player and I kicked the guy who owned it for doing so.
I'm waiting on a pair to arrive for me to play with soon
