Hi, new user here. Been a reader of this site and just recently decided to sign up and post my thoughts on my first "real" high end headphones I purchased after much reading on here.

I'm coming from....get ready.... the Sony MDR-V700J's. Yea, I know.

I don't have any amps or expensive audio equipment, so I run these directly off of my Audigy 2. The 700's were....OK, let's just say that. The high end was too shrill, and low end was just muddy as hell, along with having a very small soundstage.

First impression on these headphones is CLEAR. The sound quality is great on these, and I'vent even burned them in yet. Actually, moving up to something like this lets you hear all the bad parts of the recordings of you're favorite artists, when before they sounded just fine. Scarry. =P

I wouldn't call these very neutral headphones, or maybe I'm just not used to high end phones. The high / midrange seems very prominent, which willl take some getting used to I think, or burning in... it isn't as fatiguing as the 700s, just more prominent and clearer. Low end is not the muddy crap of the 700s, and I actually like it. It's not overpowering the rest of the sounds, but you can feel the impact of every bass drum hit / bass guitar. Very nice. If you want ear killing bass, these are NOT the headphones to get.... they have great bass though, more impact and clarity then just "boom boom". They seem to require a bit more power then the 700s, but I can still drive them fine with what I have. The isolation is also extremely cool. I have big ears, and they fit so comfortably and isolate perfectly. Extremely comfortable too, unlike the vice grip 700s. I've also tried them with a few games, such as Neverwinter Nights, and they work perfectly. Soundstage on these seems pretty good, hopefully burn in will help.

Anyways, I'm not an expert at this stuff, but I'vent seen many comments on these phones yet so I thought I'd throw my newbie comments in. I'll have to update this after I burn them in some and see how they sound then. So far, I'm extremely pleased. Sound never ..... sounded so good!

I'll say again as I have in some previous posts; The K271S are excellent Headphones. I'm using them now almost always with my HeadRoom Max.

I'n not a good "Review" person, but I recommend them Highly.

I'd say they're pretty neutral, I bet coming from the bloated V-bass 700's, that the 271's don't have as much bass as you're used to.

They're good cans, I liked them.

huskerdu: Welcome - and nice mini review! Reminds me to finally try my own K271S, which I already bought a few weeks ago to comliment my beloved K240S, but haven't listened to, yet...

P.S.: If you're ready for your next step up, try a headphone amp - or at least a receiver or an integrated amp with good headphone out. The difference will be more subtle than the sonic differences between different headphones, but it's worth it nevertheless.

I'm new here also, but I do know what the "search" button is

, and I have enlightened myself to a new world of headphone knowledge

. Sorry to thread-jack, but I thought that since I had all of the K271S owners in here my question would be answered.

I'm looking into buying a set of high-end phones and am coming from the V600's which I've had for years. I mostly listen to rap/hip-hop, rock, and techno music, so I'm looking for headphones that will be able to play the lows well. I definitely want sealed headphones for privacy and not to annoy my college roommates. Lastly, I am looking to spend >$200 and I want headphones that do not require an amp. I will be using the phones with my i-pod, laptop, and stereo.

So from my research, I have come down to two phones: Beyerdynamic DT 250-80 and AKG K271S. I have not seen a comparision of these two from searching on this site and headwize, though they seem to be similar. Could you all please compare and contrast these two? Thanks

Without an amp? You may be better off with the 250-80. I find with my 271S that I have to turn the volume up a lot before I reach resonable listening levels.

No-one's mentioned the auto shutoff? I think this is a very cool feature...

I also have a V700. I bought it this time for a mod project, ended up leaving it mostly alone... I quite like it.

I don't know about you but I burn in my phones on something head shaped.
