I believe I've narrowed my search down to these two sets of cans. I'll be using them for playing bass/guitar via an amp, with my mp3 player, and with my desktop/laptop.
I have a pair of 240s. Works nicely with my Panasonic 470.
The first AKGs with some bass in them, and nice highs.
Non-fatiguing.
When I've hooked them up to a more powerful headamp though, they do have a bit of a caramel colour too them, which is fine - nice to have some warmth from an MP3 player.
The AKG240S react pretty strongly to output impedance, favoring the lowest possible output impedance IMO otherwise it does seem to take on dark coloration and the bass which is already abundant will be sluggish.
I'd personally pick the 240S over V6/7506, which although the 240S does not project a soundstage that can equal the best of open phones (being that it is semi-open), it does a much better job in this department than the Sony with IMO more coherent highs as well. Both are great rugged and reasonably comfortable phones however and the V6/7506 will isolate much better being a true closed phone.
Please note your poll results will reflect the fact that the AKG240S came out very recently while the V6/7506 has more than a decade of reputation behind them.
While the poll taker numbers is small, the AKG's are a 2:1 favorite thus far.
Number9 - what is this "caramel colour" to which you refer. This sounds almost like a wine tasting or cigar smoking type comment. I'm not an audiophile; please elaborate if you can.
Tim D - thanks for your helpful comments. Your point about the AKG's being very new compared to the 7506's is interesting. Do you think the poll results are a result of guesswork instead of actual knowledge of the two?
I guess I used the word "caramel" to describe a mid-bass warmth. Sorry ... not trying to use audiophile jargon.
Is that good? All depends ...
I think with an MP3 player or personal CDP, which does NOT have a lot of voltage/current to put out... this warmth is good. Makes music more pleasing. No one likes a cold and brittle sound ... you won't get that with the 240S.
With my McIntosh amp ... which has power to spare ... I don't need the extra warmth .. er .. caramel ... er ...whatever ... Simply depends on what kind of sound appeals to you ... AND what will be driving the phones.
Basically .. what I'm saying is that if you plan to run them out of your MP3 player, you probably are not going to feel they sound stark or harsh compared to some other phones.
The 240S is new ... so I don't expect you'll find many who have tried both. I've not heard the Sony.
