Hey guys,

I have gotten kind of sick of my sennheiser sound, and my soundcard is broken. I need some cash, and I decided that maybe I should sell my 595s and get a new sound card and some AKG 240s cans with the money made.

I hear that the 240s cans are really "groovy" headphones and they could probably reproduce my music genre very well, which is Classic rock. I listen to Pink Floyd the most, but also Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Beatles, the Doors, Nirvana - I think you get the picture

I just want some opinions. Do you guys think that this may be a good idea?

PS: I will be buying a nice M-Audio pro-audio card with the AKG-240S cans, I hear they are a good match.

Thanks in advance guys!

I can't directly speak for The Beatles, The Doors, or Aerosmith (I don't have any of their CDs with me in Urbana), but the K240S do Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, and Nirvana quite well. They have a good deal of low end and pretty good midrange, which makes them good for such music. Bass lines sound great and are a bit more prominent than with other recent cans I've used (edit: not in a bad way, I'm no basshead though). Pretty good with trip hop and the line as well where low end is important.

Nice cans...and a good deal cheaper than the 595s.

edit: oh, and the K240S headphones you just PMed Tim D about are the ones in my hands now. Sorry.

Do you guys think that the 240S do anything better than the HD595s?

Basically, I am looking for something that does MUSIC and not AUDIO. I hope that makes some sense

It really sounds like the HD595s are just boring. They don't accelarate in anything. Nothing is enhanced. Everything sounds okay, but there's no excitement to them.

Thanks!

Yes, yes, YES! Although, some people have attributed the K240S to the Sennheiser sound. I wouldn't know, I haven't heard any senns. But again, for classic rock, the K240S are one of my, if not my #1 favorite can for classic rock. They do groove.

Unfortunately you'll want an amp to tighten up the bass a bit. It doesn't need a lot of amplification, but it does need it.

I own the K240S, however I haven't tried the Senns so I can't give you a direct comparison.

One thing I can say for sure is that with my Total Airhead (2AA) amp, coming out of my Creative NJB3, the AKG's sound great with classic rock. I find it a lot more fun than Etymotic ER-4Ps.

I can't personally say anything for the HD5*5 series. But as for other models, I owned the HD600 and heard the 580 and 650 for extended periods.

I have never liked the Senn signature in that line. Meanwhile, I definitely like what I hear from the K240S. That's not to say that the 240S are better phones -- there are many things the Senns do better. But for my *enjoyment* the cheaper 240S actually wins out. Especially with lesser equipment, given the 240S's lower impedance.

Plus the 240S don't crush my melon-head like the Senns.

Like... what? Sorry, I don't listen to pop music, but I could certainly check it out if you'd give me some artists to look up.

From your listening habits (and taking nothing away from the 240Ss which I like) are you considering the MS1 or SR225 also?

I considered the MS1's as well, but I thought that isolation would be a pretty good bonus. And I also hear that the Allesandros are a bit bright?

Do the MS1s need an amp any more or less than the 240s cans do? I WILL be running the sound out of a stereo RCA connection of my computer (M-Audio sound card). I will convert the 1/8th inch plug into two rcas with an adapter. I DO actually need more amplification than this? If so, can a simple go-vibe or something similar do the trick?

Wow, that is exactly how I felt about the HD 595! That's the reason I sold them; I felt they were rather lifeless and unexciting. I suppose they were fairly impressive from a technical standpoint, but they didn't evoke any emotion from me whatsoever when listening to them. They just didn't "groove."

K240S do not isolate at all, BTW.

The K240S is a little more exciting than the Sennheiser headphones, but it is still a fairly laid back sound, IMO. For a more aggressive sound in that price range look to Grado or Audio-Technica. My suggestion is Grado SR-225.

Grados sound better unamped than the K240S does.

Well isolate or not, I hear that they are the best for my music style

I figured that with a nice solid-state amp with my sound card should make a good pair.

Are there really ANY other options in my range? I don't want the grados/alessandros because they are two forward for my tastes, since some of the classic rock I listen to is definitely not very heavy. I want more "mellow" headphones, I guess which is another term for the more popular: "Groovalizers".
