I really like AKG and am looking for a pair of their high-end, reference 'phones. Currently, I can purchase the AKG K601 for $199, new, or their K701's for $253, new.
Is the K701's sound quality, or listening experience, really that much more enhanced over the K601, or is the difference more subtle?
The K701 is a bit more elegant in looks, but my first criteria in choosing a 'phone is listening experience. And, of course, the difference in purchase price between the two, currently, is just $54.
Which of the two would you go for and why?
I might say, here, that there are no AKG retailers anywhere near me, so I'm unable to get my hands on the K601 or K701 to compare them. But I've owned a pair of K500's for several years and love them.

Get the 701 so that you dont wonder how they sound when you get the 601.

If you can afford AKG's top of the line, why even consider dropping down a level? And especially for only $50 more! Go for the K 701!

This is one of many reasons I love headphones: where else in this world can you upgrade to the top of the line for only $50 more?! (No, supersizing your McDonald's order doesn't count!) :^)

Go for the K701 and don't look back. I really prefer it over the K601, though I couldn't afford it at the point of time when I got the K601.

By the way, (in my opinion) both the K601 and K701 look real good (and similar), so looks shouldn't be a big factor is deciding between them.

hey Aaron, do you think you can describe the important differences between the k701 and the k601? Afaik the k701 is clearer sounding, and has better bass. Is there anything else?

They could have named them "iK701"

At the first look at mine, my cousin thought they are new Apple headphones....

The sound made up for the color.

That more or less sums it up, though my listening session with the K701 was rather short (but nothing short of an enjoyable one). You'd be better of asking some who have both the K701 and K601 (though I can't remember anyone off the top of my head, it seems that once you get a K701, a K601 is not really needed).

You're welcome.

Good advice here from Dimitris - how often I have gone for the slightly cheaper option and eventually ended up with both
