Aful Performer Impressions Thread

So I REALLY like the Explorer, but do not care for the Performer 5 at all. The Explorer is fun, and while the overall treble response isn't as high as I would like, it sounded much more tonally accurate for the type of music I listen to (rock, metal, pop, everything crossing those 3 genres together) than the Performer 5 did.

From reviews, it seems like tonality wise, this is almost more in line with an upgraded Explorer than the P5. Is that right? If so, I would love to get these, but I'd be pretty disappointed if they sounded more like the P5 than the Explorer. Like I said, I love the Explorer, but something that retains that bass impact, while adding a little more details and airier treble would probably be perfect for me, so I'm seriously considering the P5 + 2.

P7 is right in the middle of P5 and Explorer

Great, thanks. I’ll definitely be checking this out when it’s released.

If you normalize at 500 Hz rather than the 1.3kHz you did, the P5 will show as about 2db higher than it does now in bass, upper mid, and treble regions.

I think I normalised by average volume rather than at 500Hz with that graph. In reality, P5 sounds more V-shaped with more pulled back midrange than the other two IEMs.

Kind of accidentally stumbled upon an awesome EQ for the Explorer. I was trying to see if I could replicate how it sounds versus the Performer 5 + 2, and got this based off Squiglink.

Preamp: -2.0 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 350 Hz Gain -1.0 dB Q 0.600
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 1900 Hz Gain 1.2 dB Q 0.600
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 8100 Hz Gain 2.6 dB Q 2.000
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 9900 Hz Gain -1.6 dB Q 2.000

Can anyone who has both try that EQ on the Explorer and see if it sounds like the Performer 5 + 2? Because that sounds awesome, but I'd prefer not to have to use EQ all the time.

Real Nice video bro...
How would you compare it to Pilgrim?
You didn’t ask me, but I’m talkative, so let me chime in.

I prefer P7 over Pilgrim. Personally, I couldn’t “connect” with Pilgrim. Yes, I still rate that IEM highly due to how well it performs against benchmark, but I don’t like how it’s stage is wide but flat rather than wrap around like P7. I also prefer the richer midrange of P7. John Denver sounds better with P7 than Pilgrim.

Resolution is neck to neck between these IEMs.

Personally, I prefer Noir over the normal Pilgrim, but Noir is a bit expensive, putting it in the collision path with Cantor, which Noir has no chance to compete on technical front, though you might argue that Noir has more pleasing “sweet” midrange than cantor.

Right now while waiting for my ordered Pula Anvil - if you're in the market for a $250 set then it's really hard to fault the Performer 5+2. The tuning is really well-balanced, fit and comfort is topnotch, aesthetics and build is alright and I listen to it longer than the DaVinci and Estrella, both $300 sets. This year so far, the Performer 5+2 along with the Kiwi Ears KE4 are my $200 range sets of choice and recommendation. Published my review here - https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/aful-performer-5-2.27590/review/36149/

Sorry man :relieved:
Wow, that was unexpected. I linked Pilgrim a lot mainly because of it's mature tonality. Now the wait is really bothering me in P5+2. I hope I haven't set my expectations too high again.

Never heard Noir but if it is bass boosted Pilgrim then I can get the idea. Although Pilgrim is pretty sweet sounding to me in the midrange, I don't think I needed a bit more sweeter presentation than it.

got the Aflul 5+2 today, first impression ? hungry boys, well... its to be expected since it has a planar, anyways, listening power is around 25% more compared to my Sound rhyme SR5 at same volume. i should try these on a balanced cable later on.

anyways put my H570 tips of them, its my favorite tips for the Dos Cinco or SR5,. and im thinking that old saying, "sometimes the light at the end of a tunnel is a train" refering to the hype train, flat lifeless sound, no bass, screechy treble. i got home and thought "this cant be right, they cant be both defective"

got home, removed the H570´s,, put the BTR7 to charge since it was dying, put a pair of velvets on it and connected it to my dawn pro and its a compleatly different IEM, proper bass, controlled treble, good vocals.

so, i dont have any impressions yet except the power draw, but the first impression was trash, but 2nd impression was VERY good.

@o0genesis0o How is the dynamics of the P7 vs U12t? I know it may not be a fair comparison, but I've seen high praises for P7's dynamics - just curious how it fares against the top performers in that aspect :)
It’s not fair,

for U12T, since P7 has 2 DD whilst U12t has only 4 BA.

I would say the presentation of overall up and down in the dynamic of music are good on both IEMs. Neither feels flat. P7 has an edge when it comes to bass impact and texture. U12t on the other hand has better resolution.
