Hello all.

I am looking for an affordable subwoofer for music. My max is $300 excluding shipping. Any ideas?
My room is kinda big (16wx16lx14h)

I just want something to full out the bottom end and ease my 601 from the bass it cant really handle. I was looking at some polk models and the velodyne CHT8 or VX100 I think it is? I dont need the heavens to cave in on me with all its thunder and anger. I just want a nice tight full sound for music with the ability to go low and get loud enough when necessary. I was also looking at the Acoustic Research range in the lower end.

Anyway,,,,,, Any suggestions?

Thanks a million

I have the velodyne CHT8 and its really an incredible sub i think it beats the crap out of most polk. Its extremely tight and once you get it setup and adjusted its one of the most musical subs ive ever heard

Our M&K-75 has worked very well, you should be able to pick one of those up for around $300.

You can go to www.soundcity.com they carry several offerings from eight different companies. I saw a bunch in your price range. They had an Atlantic Technology on sale for 179.00 that should fit your needs. Just go to subwoofers under catagorys. They carry Velodyne and PSB that were mentioned above. IMO both would be better than the polks.

The Infinity Entra 2 is good, it's got a 12" driver and a 250 watt amp Crutchfield $350

Or you could get 3 of these Sony 8" subs Crutchfield $100

not sure how good that is (probably really bad), but Velodynes are expensive (their 8" CHT is 300) and Paradigm makes good ones Paradigm

PDR Series
PS Series

Just keep in mind that Paradigm subs have a VERY high "Q", so they won't be the "boom" type subs, they are very well defined.

I was just looking at Yawa Online, and they have some B-stock (still new box, full warranty, authorized dealer) PSB subs at very good prices:

The Alpha SubSonic 5 is normally $449, they sell it for $337.

The Alpha SubZero i is normally $299, they sell it for $225.

Both of these are powered by their own internal amps.

Jeez Crescendopower, what a deal! I agree --- Dudlew, if you can get those older Klipsch SW series subs for prices like that, you should buy two. I have a friend that bought an SW-10 new several years ago, and its a very nice sub. Deep, tight, hard-hitting bass, great build quality as well.

Others? I thought the older Infinity Interlude subs, like the IL120 (might be available for around $300), were pretty good.

I was and am seriously considering the CHT-8. But does any body know about the VX100, also Velodyne, but quite cheap?

My brother has an REL Q-50 that is quite good, but he aint selling and i cant afford

I've only heard the CHT-8 in a demo at Circuit City, when I was sub shopping myself last year. Seems to be a pretty good deal -- I thought it was tight and quick and, IMHO, sounded very similar to the M&K K-9, but a bit less tight, yet with a little better extension. I have no idea what the vx100 is -- some sort of 10" woofer? I thought that the CHT-8 was better than the Polk in the same price range -- Polk had more slam, but a little sloppy sounding, a bit boomy.

I remember being impressed with one of the Mirage subs, but cannot remember the model number now.

Subs are tricky to audition, too. You should try to shop around at a knowledgeable store -- in a lot of mass retail places, the level is way to high, the crossover is way too high, etc.

RELs are very nice, but expensive.

The vVX10 is velodyne's cheapest sub which can be had for around $170. It doesnt seem to have any reviews or even a following so i would count it out.

Where I live, there is no auditioning of anything in this category cuz there is essentially nothing. Most or all subs gere are aimed for car audio setups and hence just big wasteful boxes with noname drivers in them like Nippon America and Audio Pipe

I just have to depend on reviews and what you guys recommend.
