Hello! I need recommendations from you badass headphone enthusiasts. I'm going to be buying some over-ear closed headphones for home (laptop) and travel (phone), within the next few weeks. I've been researching everything for weeks now and I'd just like some final opinions. I will likely be listening to metal, including high-pitched screams, low growls, crazy bass breakdowns, symphonic elements, etc... As well as rap with bass. I would also like to use them for gaming and general media uses. I cannot decide for the life of me. With a budget of around $100 to $300, what would you guys recommend?

I will be monitoring this thread as much as I can so please ask if you would like me to clarify anything.

Thanks! =D

The bump worked.

If you're very careful with your equipment, I'd get the Onkyo ES-FC300
There have been many reports of people getting broken cable entry on these... but almost anything will last with proper care.

I wouldn't get the Shure SRH840 - the build quality of the headband is absolutely ridiculous and prone to breaking.

Thanks for the recommendation! I haven't even heard of those headphones. And sorry for late reply; I was giving up hope in this forum after that bump but you have brought it back =D

+1

The Onkyo ES-CTI300 version is the best deal at the moment: http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-ES-CTI300-BS-Headphones-Control/dp/B00G53GJA6/

Fantastic sounding headphone for that price. I think it easily competes with the M50s. Here is a review: http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/delightful-onkyo-es-fc300-and-es-hf300#0KOlf24QGORXgg9w.97

Thank you! I really appreciate it. It seems a bit on the budget side though; I'm seeing new ones going for USD$75. My first/current pair were ****ty $100 bose headphones (they were a present) which I have begun to despise. Maybe my expensive taste is coming through already but I feel like I'd want less of a budget headphone.

Thanks for informing me about Onkyo's headphones. Seems a lot more expensive to get in Canada though; I see the ES-HF300 going for $435 and the ES-CTI300 going for $185. Though I suppose I could ship from Miami or wherever. Also, I believe I would prefer over-ear headphones so they might not be the best match for me.

For exactly 249.00 you can get the vmoda m100s bass wise it is hard to beat or the Phillips Fidelio x1s or a used Fidelio x2 can't think of anything that can beat those headphones for the price especially the x2s

Yeah the m100s seem decent but it's hard to tell if they'd be worth the extra $100 or whatever compared to ATH M50s or however much more than the Onkyos. Thanks for the Philips recommendations, I never even considered those before. The x1s are around CDN$400 now though so I'm not sure if they're the best choice at this time and the x2s are even more pricey. Damn the Canadian dollar for dropping all of a sudden.

I'm sorry I didn't know that you have to use the CDN if those Phillips are still out of the question I still would still recommend the m100s over the m50s its just a fun headphone overall I've had both and the m100s excel at hip hop better than almost any headphone at its price point. The m50 is a great headphone but you still have other headphones you might prefer another one to consider is the sennheiser momentum the first edition should be able to get one at a very good price since the version 2s are out.

The v-modas have a far too v shaped sound signature for metal. I bought my stepson a pair and tried them out... The trial made me glad I didn't buy a pair for myself. The build quality is great, and I'm sure for popular music they sound fine, but you want something with more aggressive mids and bass that's a bit less prominent than what they offer. My closed phones are Sony mdr-7520 and Sennheiser Amperior, neither of which will suit you (price for the Sony, on ear wear of the sennheiser). Besides those two, I only have experience with open phones. The guys in this thread can probably point you in the right direction though

Also, there's a thread for discussing metal. We usually talk various forms of death and black metal, so it might be up your alley.

Yes, I have heard from many folks the M-100 has bass that does tend to swamp the rest of the music a bit.  In my experience, the ON-EAR models from V-Moda, however, the M-80 and XS, do a GREAT job of having good, prominent, tight and punchy bass, but without letting that bass overwhelm or bleed into any of the rest of the frequency-range.  However, the treble on both of those is a tad less sparkly than you might like for metal music. . .even so however, the metal I do listen to sounds VERY good on my V-Moda M-80s.  When it comes to metal I almost exclusively listen to old-school stuff, but I can tell you that Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and even Slayer all sound FANTASTIC on the M-80s.

Meanwhile, when it comes to rap, I have to say, the V-Moda M-80s do rap AMAZINGLY well.  And from what I hear many folks say about them, the XS do everything the M-80s do, but even better.

THen there's the build-quality.  V-Moda's headphones, as the guy I quoted here mentions, have very good build.  In fact, some of the best build quality in the entire world of headphones, really.  I have a feeling I couldn't manage to break these things unless I either ran them over with my car, or actually strained a bit to try to snap the headband or something, and I am a pretty strong guy.  These things are like a damn tank.

ANyway that's my two-cents:  To sum things up, my V-Moda M-80s do the rap and metal I listen to quite spectacularly for a pair of closed on-ears.

THat being said, a good step-up, if you're willing to pay about twice as much, for all-genre headphones, would be either the Sony MDR-1A or the PSB M4U1.  The latter would probably be better for two genres like rap and metal that contrast so greatly with each-other.  You wouldn't be able to get a pair of either of them new, but you could easily find them used for under 250, and most folks could tell ya that there's really nothing wrong with getting used headphones as long as it's from a reliable seller.
