Hi all, my current set up is:

Spotify
Musical Fidelity V-Dac
Schiit Magni
Beyerdynamic DT1770 PRO

I mainly listen to bass heavy electronic music (drum and bass, dubstep etc).

I'm going to butcher the lingo here but the current set up is fine but it doesn't get me excited. The highs don't get crystially enough (I play drums so I know how cymbals sound in real life) and the base sounds carboardy rather than full and round.

Heck, the bass on my Bose QC sounds better.

For context I've a friend with a Musical Fidelity CD/AMP set up and Monitor Audio Silver speakers and that sounds incredible. Getting anything close to that would be perfect.

My question is, what is the weakest part of the system and what should I look at upgrading first.

The budget is $1000 or so.

Thanks all!

Changing headphones will have the most effect on the sound, by far, especially since you already have an amp. I'm quite happy with my Audio-Technica ATH-R70X -- haven't heard the newer ATH-R70xa -- but there may well be something better within your (higher) budget.

Grew up through the evolution from hardcore to D`N`B .

Some cans to look into: LCD 2 closed/ Quad Era-1/ Ultrasone Pro-900i.
The latter is more V-shape just be mindful of the volume in that case..

I would suggest taking the time to visit a store to compare, PM if you need suggestions, GL.
