Advice needed: New to Metal, and I want to buy around 25 albums.

Okay, lets see...

Gernotshagen - Märe aus wäldernen Hallen (excellent black metal from Germany, not "beginner")

Funeral - From These Wounds (a good introduction into Doom metal)

I'll reiterate the importance of the decision to buy Ghost Reveries by Opeth

Cradle of Filth - Sample as many albums as you can, the evolution of this band sent me on numerous eye-opening quests for more music.

Dragon Force - any album you want to try
Demons and Wizards - Touched by the Crimson King

*the two above are for a dalliance into power metal

Skinless, Bloodbath, or Dying Fetus which will introduce you to the concept of brutal death metal

Arch Enemy, In Flames, or Children of Bodom for a trip down "melodic death" lane.

I dunno, that sounds good to me. I might add more later.

Cheers!

Bongzilla rules. So does Weedeater. Weedeater's new album (recorded by Steve Albini) is just crazy good.

Ok, I got some more recommendations

(the) Melvins - (a) Senile Animal
Boris - Pink

Both have a sludgy sound, and Boris cites Melvins as inspiration.

Do yourself a favor and get:
PARADISE LOST -SYMPHONY X
excellent new metal disc. Proggy with a mindblowing guitarist and excellent vocals by Russell allen , in my opinion one of the best voices in metal.

If you are not sure:
just youtube : Michael romeo

that symphonyx guitarist.

Deicide - Once upon the cross

Self appointed satanist with lyrics that are quite over the top and make you laugh. They take themselves seriously as far as I understand. How about the song "Kill the christian", the refrain basically goes: "Kill the christian, Kill the christian, Kill the christian, Kill the christiaaaaaaan"..
Pretty great technical players in the speed department (drummer have sore feet for sure) For me Deicide is the only death metal I can enjoy. Even if it is on an ironic level.

Meshuggah - Chaosphere

Good starting point for Meshuggah's albums I think. Pretty accessible sound and still groovy and some advanced time signatures and tricky plays about. Heavy riffs and nice jam feel over the grooves.

Heres a music video from the album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5A0q63_gbo

It's worth a watch, comical

Well, the early Deicide definitely appeared to take themselves seriously ( frontman Benton, anyway), but later day Deicide is more “about the methul” than youthful self importance.

Kill the Christian was about a religious talk radio host from Tampa that liked to protest/ argue with members of the nascent death metal scene.

A small list:
1.Morbid Angel –Blessed are the sick
2.Cynic-Focus
3.Emperor- In the nightside eclipse
4.Pelican-Australasia
5.Tristania- Widows Weeds
6.Opeth- Blackwater Park
7.Immortal- Blizzard Beasts
8.Dimmu Bogir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
9.Possessed -Seven Churches
10.Dissection- The Somberlain
11.Black Sabbath- Paranoid
12.Arcturus- Sideshow Symphonies
13.Falkenbach- ..En Their Medh Riki Fara.../or ...Magni Blandinn ok Megintiri...
14.Nokturnal Mortum-Lunar Poetry
15.Green Carnation- Light of Day, Day of Darkness

Here goes my my short list in no particular order :

Therion - Theli
Dimmu Borgir - I actually seem to play Stormblast abit more than Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
Bathory - Hammerheart
Mercyful Fate - Melissa and Don't Break The Oath
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Opeth - Morningrise

Whether these are too mainstream would depend on what you already have I suppose

Dixie Dave from Weedeater is nowadays also playing bass in Bongzilla. He's just an awesome bass player. Crazy as hell too - in a good way.
My previous band played with both bands in Madison 2 years ago and gaaawd, I was smiling through both bands sets. _HE-EAVY_ as f-.
