Hello, I'm mostly interested in non-portable setup, although if it'd be possible to get an amp and headphones that could optionally be portable if needed, without much increased price and loss of quality, that would also be nice. My existing equipment is: nad c340 amp, nad 523 cd player and mdr-7502 sony headphones. Before that I also had grado sr-60s and a sennheiser model about the same price range. My impressions were that sr-60s are a bit better sounding but sennheisers were much more comfortable. Having better sound isolation is a significant plus for me. I'm not exactly sure how much I want to spend. I can't say that money is not an object but I'd like to get a nice aural experience too. I don't want to plunk an extra hundred for nearly imperceptible improvement but if an improvement is notable I'd be willing to pay more.

I've read a bit of the forum and right now I'm leaning towards either sony mdr-v6 or some sennheiser model in the same price range. I did like the sound quality of grados, though, so I might get the sr-80 or sr-125, too.

I don't know what to do about the amp - would I be able to improve on nad 340 significantly by getting an amp in the range of about $100-150? If so, what are good choices for the headphones I mentioned above?

I'm also not too sure as to what to do about the cd player. The main issue is that it can't play audio cd-rs very well. Sometimes it can play the whole disk but at other times it will start skipping after half of the disk or so, and needs some time to rest before it can play again. For regular cds, it works fine. I was considering marantz cd5001, there seems to be a large degree of agreement that it's a very good value, I've also read that sometimes you might get a unit that isn't sounding very good and then you need to be able to return it and get a replacement. For this reason it seems like it's better to get a new unit from a local store vs. buying a discounted unit online? Does that make sense? I don't mind paying 30% more to make sure the it's good. This is especially an issue because I may not be able to tell if it's one of those 'bad' units or I just don't like the way it sounds as a matter of preference.

I'm in brooklyn, by the way, is there some advice on what are good places locally to buy these components? Which of these are best (much cheaper and not risky wrt quality) to get online?
