I love psychology. I spent last winter researching the psychology of this and other similar forums.
This is from Nathan Schwartz-Salant's "Narcissism and Character Transformation". Substitute "fellow Head-Fier's" for "patients":
"The patient's joy is a marvelous thing, and at times it is difficult not to want it, and in the process (we) tend to repeat the role of rapist in our own envious excitement."
It's not so much that fundamentally unhappy people want the DT770, it's that they don't want those who have it - or anything else - to enjoy it.
It's joy that disturbs them. It's the sight of joy that they envy.
