I'll have to post this here because putting it the drunkard.com forum would be the equivalent of recommending Bose.

After reading about it for months, or decades if you count Hemmingway novels, I tried Absinthe for the first time last night, from an expensive bottle of what's probably about as close as you can get to the real stuff today from France. I couldn't even finish the glass -- I just found it to be absolutely frigging revolting. Like the worst medicine you ever took. And no, I wasn't drinking it straight, it was cut with ice water and sugar in the usual manner.

Worse, in the morning I woke with a mild hangover!!! From barely one drink of that stuff??? (Okay, I also had a couple vodkas, but that was a couple hours earlier and not nearly enough to do it.)

I'll give it another shot (no pun intended) over the weekend, but I just don't think the green fairy is for me. I never heard of anyone not liking it before.

I tried it at my friends house. Even though I love booze, I didnt find it particularly pleasant, and it burned my mouth and tongue and they were sore for a week afterwards. This was 85% strength, and drank straight. It was like drinking a mouthfull of petrol and lighting a match in my gob.

Each to their own though,

I use la Fee Verte for information regarding Absinthe. Perhaps you can check the details of your bottle with their database/buyer's guide to see whether you are drinking a 'dud'.

Absinthe isn't usually consumed for it's taste, although there are nice ones. A bottle I got from Prague was quite pleasent, the bottles (various brands) I got in Barcelona were quite nice too, aniseed flavour. Lots of wormwood too.

I usually drink it as a shot near the *start* of the evening. A friend of mine described it best: it makes the whole evening seem mildly.... trippy. When combined with (ahem) other substances the night can take a very bizzare twist.

My suggestion: try another brand, maybe one from a different country.

The general consensus is that absinthe is pointless beyond the novelity factor. Sorry guys, thujone just isn't terribly psychoactive

I'm aware that there are counterfeit absinthes out there due to some national restrictions on so called controlled substances.

The legality of absinthe is actually somewhat ambigious. It's not illegal to posess, and is sold on ebay by many sellers, but is illegal to sell. The ebay-ers circumvent this by listing the absinthe as historical items, and state that it isn't for consumption.

But seriously guys, if you're trying to get messed up on legal substances, there are better choices out there
