What type of headphone amp is suitable for A900s, an already efficient 40 ohm can? And for loud low ohm cans in general?

I am not sure how it works, but if its already loud, will the amp not allow you turn it down to very low volume?

As of now, i have put money towards new sources [see profile]
these greatly improved midrange and separation. I am to believe this low ohm headphone gets more benefit through a good source more than an amp.

But to make sure, for good knowledge, I ask the people here..and await how crazy your answers will range from :P

(expects nothing but recommendations for things I can not afford) :P

Thanks-

A900 sounds pretty good driven by just about anything including iPod. Amps do add more puchy bass, transparent and more separations between instruments, but differences aren't that huge compare to high impedance cans like Sennheiser HD-6x0 series. To my ears, improvements are noticeable, and worth it. You mileage may vary though

I am currently running a Millet Hybrid with A-900’s and agree with the others that an amplifier adds a small benefit. It is the color of the sound that I appreciate from a Tube amp that couples well with the bass capability of the A-900. (Basically it sounds a little better)

one thing to remember about the A900's is that they can handle a full 2W of power and i find that giving them at least a watt can really help even the balance between the highs and lows and give some needed detail to the upper mids.

when i first got mine i was thinking of selling them for AKG's because of the lack of detail in the mids, but driving them off a McIntosh amp's headphone output makes them much less sell-able

Oh i am jealous of the McIntosh

well if it can take 2W (2000mW) then an output of 600mW (or .6WATT) wont hurt them

I have a Gilmore Lite for my A900's, and it really helped on opening it up. what I mean is, the bass is so much tighter, its got that extra oomph to it.

they won't be too loud? i'm just learning all this. with volume turned down its not still putting out 600mw? yes...just count the # of posts.

No wattage is directly related to volumes.
As like in speakers
89 Dba for a 89 sensitivity speaker is only using 1 watt of power.
and for every 3 dba, its using double the last watt.

89 /1watt
92/ 2watt
95/ 4watt
98/ 8watt
102/ 16watt
105/ 32watt
108/ 64watt
-109.5 96 watt (1.5)

so depending on how loud you use the volume, the wattage regulates. It is the same for headphones.

btw whats the vol. output of my audigy 2 zs card? I heard it was 50mW
but at 25% its already wicked loud. And if its 101 db spl, at 25% main volume i think some math related functions do not match correctly.
