I made my avatar with my digital camera pointing at myself. I'd say about half of us make our own and the other half use album covers or small pics that they find.

Mine is of my three PCDPs (Hmm... time for a change me thinks)

You can probably get them from elsewhere on the net as long as they're not copywrited or anything like that... and then you need a graphics package to reduce the size (75x75 pixels IIRC)

I lifted mine from an odd Japanese headphone website for JVC. They sell an earclip type headphone that you can personalize with various little pictures they post on the site. You download the picture, color copy it, print it, cut it out and insert it on the side of the headphone.
