I am currently using my ipod nano 2G 4gb that i've had for years and i have a creative zen 2gb i find to be a piece of junk.

I am debating:

Sansa Clip+ 4gb + 16gb micro sdhd card for total of $100
VS
Sony S545 16gb for a total of $147

Now what i am looking for is sound quality mainly, both will have comparable capacity, both have solid UIs and both support lossless (sony with firmware update) but i do plan to mainly play V0 mp3s.

Id like feedback from those who have tried both, or have done a side by side comparison. Please i don't give it, so I'd appreciate no second hand opinion/information.

Thanks a lot!

It's hard to find more bang for your buck. A second hand Cowon D2 can be a good option too. The Sony S720-series is also pretty cheap second hand.

I tried Clip (not the +) vs. the S639 (which I believe is very if not identical sound wise to the 545)

I personally think the S sounds better. But what I can tell you for sure is that the EQ is a whole lot better and I enjoy the 639 a whole lot more. For bass-light headphones like the RE252s, I cant really handle it with the clip.

I think for the same price I'd go with the Sony but I'm not sure I'd want to pay an extra ~50 bucks.

I had a chance to try a S and E sony 8gb side by side with the same files and they sound identical. I'm going with a sony 16gb E series i dont need the bigger screen i never used video on a portable.

I own a Sansa Fuze (should be very close to Clip+ as they share almost the same internals) and a Sony S639 (again, should be very close to S545 - I listened to many Sony DAP's and they all had the same kind of sound signature). The S639 is an amazing DAP, especially if you want to use the EQ - here is where the Fuze lacks behind significantly with the original firmware.

On the other hand, Rockbox brings new life to my Fuze. The EQ flexibility and the wide range of file formats accepted under Rockbox made me prefer the Fuze over Sony (even though I still miss somehow the Sony sound). But only a few Sansa models would accept the alternative Rockbox firmware...

I own both and they both sound great.
