I'm currently a verizon wireless subscriber. I am thinking of switching to the iphone. Can I do the following:
Walk into at&t and get a free cheapo phone with no data plan.
Buy an out-of-contact iphone 3g
swap the earlier owner's sim card with the one that I have.
Use the phone and not have to get the data plan.

Is this possible? Please provide your experience.

Yes, you can do this. I have done it before with an unlocked iPhone first gen.

It HAS to be unlocked.

Also it will be pretty crippled (no visual voicemail).

That how it was for 2G iphone since they weren't available without contracts. I think now if you buy official no-contract iphone it comes factory unlocked, so it shouldn't be crippled. But its Apple+AT&T so I won't be surprised if they still "cripple" it.

Make sure you are not on the network though. If you are able to access the internet you will probably rack up a huge bill since you have no data plan

The risks are more, so i may go in for a new one with data plan. I feel $30 each month is better than $10000 one fine day of some unknown charges/usage.

I have another question: I have an itouch which is up for sale in the FS section. When i sell it i want to backup all my data to itunes and then delete everything from the itouch. How can i delete data from itouch, especially itunes store account? and also can I transfer my itunes backed up data (apps+songs) to my new iphone?
