I was thinking about getting the one with all the freebies at www.teamdigital.net .. the DR480H ... same as DR7 just with more accessories..

comes with a USB link thingy.. and quite a few other accessories.. so anyways.

I was thinking of either getting the Sharp DR7 bundle, or the iRiver-550 (I have the 350.. not too happy with it... but all the stuff I'm worried about is fixed on the 550).. but was thinking of switching to the MD world.. so here's the question:

How's the Anti-skip on the DR7?

Can I go jogging with it in my pocket? Would I be able to play tennis with it in my right pocket?

Or will it never, ever skip, like some of the Sony MDs (or so I've heard..)

It seems like a nice player.. and I'll be listening to it on SP most of the time..

Thanks in advance...

(and if you want.. convince me to get the iRiver-550 instead... cause really.. it costs quite a bit less :p)

[if I had money, I'd get both, and I have a META42 btw... with crossfeed and AD8620]

I got a dr7 a little over 1.5 weeks ago. And I never really thought about the skip protection.

But running around my house, skipping, jumping, eventually tapping the dr7 and hitting it in my jeans pocket I couldn't really get it to skip. Now I'm not sure when it hits a threshhold(if it does), but I slapped it pretty hard and it still wont skip. Of course I kept it in it's stock pouch and didn't hit it on the front(can't kill the buttons/screen now, ya know?). So I think if it can withstand running/jumping/etc. in my jeans pocket, it has enough skip protection.

Sharp's skip protection is very good, but is still a bit more susceptible than Sony's G-protection (which really virtually never skips). If it bugs you that there's a slight chance it might skip during 30-40 in a tennis game, get a Sony

Just did some 3D shaking with D7
biggrin.gif
.... man I am tired.
It skipped once after around 90 seconds, and I kept shaking, but it didn't get skipped the next minute.... I shook it realy tirrible and in all directions with 5-8 beats a second.
I am impressed that it just continues like no one business.
I am curious about joging too. Will test it tomorrow, was plannig to do it anyway.

Will post my impressions if anyone is interested.

I have the DR7. In my experience it *will* skip when you do long distance running - especially on hard surfacs like the road. No skip problems when running to catch the bus or anything similar when you run for 30 secs and stop. No skip problems in typical usage eg gym or walking around. Bet definitely so on long distance runs.

The DR7 skipped the worst for me when I jogged with it in my pocket. It does best being held in my hand or on an arm strap. I havent tried one of those fanny-pack belts yet. Whatever you do, it will skip if its not held down tight - so loose pockets are a definite no-go.

I'm not sure that is Sony MD is necessarily better. I had a Sony R900 that never skipped - and it had no "G-protection". However I also had a more recent model, the Sony R909 that had the G-protection. It skipped about the same as the Sharp DR7 - ie only when doing vigorous running on hard urfaces for a long time.

Hmm....

interesting :p

And I probably wouldn't use it during a tennis game... the other coaches say having headphones on is "a safety hazard".. more for practicing serves or taking out stress on the wall :p

So it probably won't skip then...

But practicality wise.. it would probably be a better idea to stick with MP3CD (iRiver 550)... it is just so much more convenient and easy :p

MD is so small and sweet though :p

Tough choice.. might even end up choosing by price..

if you really use it for such high impact activities, you really gotta consider what's going on inside the unit. for cd players, the laser head's gotta be taking quite a spanking. im not too familar with MD, but i'd be afraid of subjecting it to intentional shaking. imagine if you were the MD or cd player...your brain, the main processing unit, would be taking some wicked hits (even tho there are built-in protection mechanisms).

for such activities, i'd stick with a solid-state player. or get an extended warranty.

I made my DR7 skip! (hehe.. SUKIPPO SUKIPPO BASUKETTO sagete). I was running in the rain.. and he went 'no thanks' and skipped. Skipping reminds me of my E900... blah..
(too much coffee..)

MyselfAkaMe,
Do you usually jog in the train?

I went jogging this morning with my DR7, just to see if it's doable.
First I put it in my back pocket (which is quite big), and after around 100 second the music stopped.

I thought "hey, this s*@&s", I had to stop for a few seconds and give MD some time to adjust. Started running again, and after around 100 second...boom... again! The DR7 was REALLY jumping in my backpocket...
I decided to put it in the front/side pocket.... Not expecting much, I started running again. The music kept on going without pauses or skips.

It was like a whole new player.
There were some moments that it skipped, but the music kept going right after that. During my 35 minutes run it did skip 3 times. I used a recording in SP mode and 74 minutes TDK disc. I also have some Sony "Memory Shock Resistant" discs, but didn't try it as I don’t have any SP recordings on them.
Pull your own conclusion from this. But it seems that tight pockets will help a lot, a special belt-bag would produce even better results (as the player moves even less) and maybe Sony "MSR" discs can make a difference.

No, I jog in the rain sometimes! (there is no 't' in front of 'rain'

)

This happens when I get caught out by the random NZ weather, an all too common occurance. I have a 2.6k run home.

Hi, if you are using the DR7 for such active use like playing tennis, I would suggest you get a player only. Those usually have better shock protection and durability than recorders. not to mention they are much lighter and thinner. but then you would need a recorder as well to record.

my e909 player (purchased from a fellow member), has never skipped once when I went running with it. my n505 recorder starts skipping around the time i finish half a lap (maybe 1/8 mile).

i also just purchased a dr480 from teamdigital and am eagerly waiting for its arrival. that place has really fast and friendly service. i will be mainly using the dr480 at home when I can appreciate the difference in sound quality. all the sony units i've tried (N1, R900, E909, N505) have this horrible hissing sound in the background that drives me nuts whenever I want to listen quietly.
