I decided to switch to a lithium 9v battery in my Zen Head portable amp instead of using an alkaline 9v. The lithium battery is very slightly longer about 1/64" longer but (which is actually the more critical dimension as there is no room for play in the compartment) it appears to be almost a 1/32" or more thicker . As a result of this the battery has to compress the felt pad attached to the inside top of the compartment a bit more than the alkalines would. It is a tight fit to be sure ,but it does fit completely inside & you are able to close the case as originally. I knew that it was going to be a little bit of a pita to remove because there is nothing to grab so I very gentlly slowy wedged each end of the battery w/ a minature srewdriver until I was able to grab the ends of the battery. Then it came to me , all you need to do is put a piece of ribbon around the middle of the battery long enough so that the ends form a tab you can pull when it comes time to remove it. I apologize in advance for the simpleistic nature of this advice, but sometimes the simple approach isn't readily apparent to us in our excitement over our new toys. Well, at least that's how things are for me.

Yeah, I have owned a few devices in my time that had a thin ribbon permanently attached to the battery compartment for the purpose you described.

Another thing I thought of is to use double-sided foam tape to stick your finger onto the battery in order to pull it out.
