Hi guys, I was browsing on craiglist and found this ad for toyota celica which interest me.

2003 TOYOTA CELICA GT-S with LOW MILEAGE

I tried to contact the seller. This is his reply:

Quote:

Hey,
I am selling this car because my unit will be sent back to Iraq and don't want it getting old in my backyard. The price is low because I need to sell it before Oct 30th. The Toyota Celica is in great condition and run great. It is still available for sale if interested, price as stated in the ad US $4000. The car is in Billings, MT, and in case it get sold I will take care of shipping. Let me know if you are interested, email back.
George

I asked for vin and his contact number, instead I got another reply:

Quote:

Hey,
I am in a military base now. We are training, getting ready for Iraq. I am only allowed to check my email twice a day. I hope you can understand we will have to stick to email for now. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 3 days testing period after delivery. During that 3 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask eBay to send you the details on how this works. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (name, address and #) so we can get things started. Thanks

I've given him another reply, instead of giving him my name and address, I asked him to post it on ebay. At this point, I consider this a scam. I'm just curious how will he try to scam me. If it's legit, that will be a very great price for that car however I'm not going to pay any penny before I see and test drive that car.

Classic scam, really vintage.

There's no "eBay buyer protection program". eBay do not and will not run or be involved in any type of escrow service. Ever.

And if at some point in the future they do start one, don't bloody use it...

Yes, apparently this scam has been going around for years. The trouble with these lying scammers is that don't know how to stop themselves from telling whoppers. They always have to embelish "I'm a divorced woman" "I'm a solider about to go overseas" "My father is a South American banker..." Yeesh. :P

Oh, and here's another warning. You said you wouldn't pay a penny until you get and test drive it. Well, also MAKE SURE YOU SEE THE REGISTRATION and TITLE. Someone in my office bought a car off Craiglist, they said they lost the title and he could get a duplicate from the DMV. Gives him form and all the "information." My co-worker applies for a new registration. Surprise! It was a stolen car off a used car lot. Police impounded car. Car goes back to dealer. Cops told fellow worker, "You're just outta luck..."

EDIT: Oh, dude. I just looked at the photo and ad. 2003 Toyota Celica for $4k! with warranty! Good luck!!!

Yeah I saw that 2003 with warranty and had to laugh, but had nothing useful to post so I didn't

I've gotten that exact same e-mail, word-for-word, when car shopping on ebay. It was a nice looking Jeep, and a pretty great price, but we stayed away from it.

All things must change...

My $6500 is stuck in PayPal for 21 days thanks to ebay's "buyer protection". Hello Visa interest fee

Damn, I think we got the same scammer. I asked for a vin number, he just provide one for me, voila, the vin number is for a jeep wrangler. What a lazy scammer
