Hey guys... long time reader, first time poster. A brief intro might be in order.

Cliff Notes
- Want a good pair of headphones for uses listed near the end of thread.

- Less than 250$ cans is ideal

- Can anyone recommend a solid pair of AKG headphones? I like their look and

- Not fond of artificial bass or clunky sounding headphones (like the panasonic I own - bass is over-done and treble suffers because of it).

- I do love heavy bass though

full story

My name is Sargent Pepper... a mini audiophile... I stumbled across this site searching for a correct pair of headphones to satisfy my - then not very demanding - needs...

So, lets get started ... I went into my local Best Buy and picked up a pair of ...

Panasonic.RP-HTX7.Blue.Retro.Headphones.3909.jpg

Panasonic RPH-THX7 ...

I was blown away at first (Bear with me)... the clarity of the sound and the closeness was awesome. Fast forward a few unsatisfied months of distortion and uncomfortable wear, I decided I needed a better pair. I could hear distortion on these headphones at higher volumes. I could hear them crackling when I watch TV. I can hear them buzz when I plug them into my computer or play my Xbox 360.

They've served me well, but it's time to move onto bigger and better headphones...

I've read and read and read and am having trouble deciding between a pair of Ultrasone DJ pro1

DJ1PRO1-1.JPG

or a pair of Senheisser HD595 (Seems to get the nod from almost everyone)

01x1L2oaK2L._SS50_.jpg

I've heard good things about both and would e-bay either... I want a pair of headphones that will last me for years to come with superb sound.

Let me break down what I use headphones for.

- Gaming (TV with Xbox 360 / PS3) and portable (Nintendo DS)
- Watching television
- Portable audio (mp3 player - creative zen vision M)
- Whenever I'm on the Computer

I can't get deep / tight bass and crystal clear sound with my current cans... I would really like to upgrade them.

So, can anyone give one of the pairs a nod? Which would you buy and prefer over the other? Also, are there any other cans out there that you would recommend over both these models?

Last question - are the Ultrasone HiFi brand better than the DJ Pro1 brand?

Thanks Head-Fi!

P.s - I'm not looking to spend a ton of cash... I was planning to ebay both these sets... which would run me at about 300 bucks. Tops. So please recommend within that range.

Those two headphones are not alike in any way. The DJ1's are closed headphones while the 595's are open. If you need isolation the 595's will not provide any for you as they leak a lot of sound. Also, I do not give the nod to the 595's. One of the most boring headphones I have heard. Of course just my opinion, but I think you can do way better than a pair of 595's.

really? open? and I can do way better?

Such as? How are the pair of Ultra-sones? I've also heard good things about the AKG brand - any solid recommendations? I really like the way those look.

Bit pricey... are the ultrasone's that bad? I found a good deal for them... I've never heard of the Denon's either?

Any word on a solid pair of AKG?

Not really... well, not whenever I buy the things, later on down the line - maybe. But again, I doubt it... mainly because I'm not so sure how amp's work and how well they would function with portable devices...

or are they only for in-home use?

I guess I'm kinda' deciding between those three...

AKG K601 is an open 'phone (and probably won't sound great when unamped). K81DJ is a solid beginner 'phone, but I don't think you will find it to be a large sonic improvement from HTX7 (check out the link in my signature). You should also pay some attention to Audio-Technica. Their closed portable series seems to have quite a few supporter here.

Thing is... I have a solid deal for the Ultrasone DJ1 pro's... I'm just wondering whether or not they're good enough to get a nod from the audiophiles, lol.

Any one know of any decent deals on the Ultrasone HFI 780s, if the DJ1pro's aren't up to grade?

Eh, I'm not made of money :P... I'm good with having a pair last me ~ 2 - 3 years of solid use ... I'm more than happy to replace them then.

I was thinking of the Audio Technica brand, not sure which one to even consider though?

Actually this wasn't a bad suggestion from everything I have read. Do a search for them, great for movies and games, and evidently pretty good for music too. They are the latest FOTM, but do sound like a value especially compared to the other options.

The Audio Technica bass doesn't sound quite up to your style, BTW.
