A Complete List Of Basshead Headphones

Is this list supposed to be phones that have exaggerated bass, or just phones that are highly capable of producing bass?

eg. one pair of headphones might bring out more bass than is actually in a recording, wheras another may not produce any more bass in it's natural state, but in the right situation (eg equalised, or a highly bassy song) will produce nice bass

I'm a part-time basshead. When the urge hits out come the 590's which do the job nicely, or on come the huge Klipsch speakers which do the job even more nicely

but headphones really can't keep up with speakers, so that's not a comparison.

But, the interesting thing is: when properly EQ'd, the Stax SR-001 will match the 590's bass for bass! They'll actually have more audible bass, and almost as much tactile bass! Now I don't like to EQ things since introducing more elements into the signal path will inevitably degrade quality - which the 001 is very sensitive to - so I don't normally use them that way (that, or maybe it's just that my pre-amp sucks, which it does).

I'm pretty sure the Shure E5c is the same way. It's a basshead's top pick for an IEM without getting into the custom molded varieties. It should be in the list as well!

The new Ultrasone Proline 550 is a bassheads delight, very fun to listen to actually.

I definitely second that opinion.
The PROline 550 got some serious bass, and is much fun.

The PROline 750 is much more balanced, but still quite a bassheavy headphone. I hope someone else tries out the 750. It's really good.

I would remove the HD25-1s of the list. Bass is fine but not basshead material.
I always read that the eggos were bass shy

I guess I have to read that thread linked above.

MS-2s, yes lots of bass
PX100s, yup also lots of bass.

Nope, they don't count if they need to be modified.

My vote goes to the V6/7506's.

The HD 25's were going to be my next pair, but i wanted a few more opinions. What i found were completely opposite opinions, people seem to think that they're great basshead headphones or horrible basshead headphones.

I'm confused.

So the search must go on.

To me the Beyer 770 epitomizes (for better or worse) the basshead headphone

So all following basshead headphones should match them in terms of either exaggerating bass or producing bass. I suppose that the general consensus is that the 770 exaggerates the bass. I mention this not as a value judgement. Corvettes aren't good for trasporting large objects. So my thought is that the way that the 770 is s basshead headphone, so should all that follow.

That being said, i'm personally looking for something with that exaggerated bass, but a step down so that there's more mids that are present.

I really want to try these one day, but it appears you cannot buy them in the UK. They are also quite expensive (about £200+ IIRC) - so they wanna be good

BTW, I find some of the suggestions being put forward for bass head headphones as being quite laughable to be honest (DT860, A900 etc).

I think I would probably add DT990 to the list. Also, the DT531 can give great bass if one likes bass but hates totally overblown bass - I feel it has great punch, and with the right amp, good speed too.

They're almost similar to my SP - have lots of bass (too overweight for me), good balanced mids but poor HF details. Sportapro also have bass allover, but imo not in a nice way.

Nothing beats my K-1000 + subwoofer combo. Having variable bass level in the first octave is a delight.

Second choice is the Sen HD600 with an digital EQ and a good clean amp. The bass is amazing, with bottomless extension and amazing speed. The absense of overhang does take some of the fun out of it, though. With the EQ, I am also in love with the AT AD10 and the AT W100.

Unassisted, I think the Ultrasones are champs (I have the HFI650). They use a resonator that beefs up the deep bass. Unfortunately they have a boosted treble as well, and the stock pads are a pain.

The Beyer DT250-250 can also produce very satisfying bass without EQ, if they are working right. I had to rework the right side of one pair due to an assembly issue which robbed them of deep bass. A little known secret is that these cans are very tuneable for bass response, but you need some simple test gear to know where you are at with them. They are very sensitive to minor changes, and you can overshoot.

What not to get: the Sony F1.
