I'm currently shopping around for a new set of headphones to compliment my Beyer 770/80.

Ideally i would like for them to have basshead style bass response, though i recognize that the bass would be less than the 770s. I would like something with a little less of a "scooped" frequency response. So i've been trying to figure out which headphones to narrow my search down to.

The suggestions that i've seen so far are:

Eggo MDR-D66
Sennheiser HD-25
Audio-Technica ATH-A900

Nominated:

PS-1
Alessandro MS-2
Koss KSC-35
Grado RS1
Ultrasone HFI-700
Koss Sporta Pro
Koss Porta Pro
AKG 240S
AKG K-66
Sennheiser 590
Sennheiser PX 100

I was hoping that i could get a complete list of headphones (excluding earbud and canalphone styles) suitable for proper "basshead" listening.

Hopefully there are some other headphones that people can suggest that i can add to my list.

Thanks in advance.

Just from the cans i have heard, regardless of expense -

Cans with pleasing punchy in your face bass (other than the DT770 you mentioned)-

PS-1
MS-2
KSC-35

Those that didn't -

CD3K

so far nothing beats harder than the Grado RS1/Krell/Gilmore combo.

If we're only talking about the amount of bass...

The RS-1 don't have that much bass compared to the real basshead headphones. At the time I owned them I had a friend of mine listen to them. He felt that the bass was lacking when driven from a RA-1 clone.

The Ksc 35 isn't really basshead either since the Porta Pro definately has more bass. Quality bass is a different issue however. I think the Porta Pro is the budget basshead headphone.

The HD 25-1 are not basshead headphones. They do have an accentuated bass response but not as pronouced as on the Beyer 770 or Ultrasone 700 for instance.

The Ultrasone 700 do have a quite strong lower bass and the bass impact is very strong as well. You can really feel the bass. Definately a runner's up for basshead headphones.

The PS-1 has a lot of (quality) bass although I didn't listen to it with flat pads, which supposedly will increase the amount of bass manifold.

Finally, until I can hear a PS1 with flats and a better amp than the X-can I used, in my book the Beyerdynamic Dt 770 will remain the headphone with the biggest amount of bass (i.e. way too much for me

AKG240S have good bass despite the driver being the size of a quarter, i was shocked when i seen that. The K66 have some nice bass also for their price SUPER forward sound.

Also the koss UR40 use the KSC 60 ohm driver as do the KTX pro1

This is why I can't isolate 'fones and the rest of ancilaries.

You'll be surprised how much of qualtiy bass there with the Krell source partnered with equally ballsy amplifier.
