I previously owned a pair of a900s which were great for all types of music and movies. I like watching dvds on my laptop and I listen to mostly rock/metal, jazz and classical. Im thinking about the 770-80 but:

1) How is the beyers compared to the a900s for movies and for my types of music?

2) Will the bass of the the beyers cloud the detail of the instruments in my music?

3) I dont want to get an amp so can it be propertly driven from my laptop sound card?

4) Ive heard that the 770s are good if someone wants alot of bass and little else. Is this accurate?

I dont own the DT770-80, but DT770-250 and A900. So my opinion is not 100% accurate regarding your request, but I will just put my opnions, and also remember that everything in audio is relative to the users personal preferences,

A900 is a more balanced headphone, they sound good in almost every source and they dont need an amp. The DT770-250 are real basheaded headphones, are very unique, defently a keeper, but its not for all music.

IMO, yes, but it will depend on the recording, source, amp, etc.

A900 sound great out of a soundcard, but an amp does improve them. But my DT770-250 sound very bad out of my soundcard, I have read even the DT770-80 need an amp to sound good. I think if you are not going to get an amp, is better to go for A900.

IMO yes, the DT770 are very unique headphones, this are the most impresive headphones that I have ever tried regarding bass, sometimes they even vibrate cause of the low frecuencies, this are very good for bassheaded people.

Good luck, and try to wait for more opinoins,
