I want to buy some used speakers, but i dont know what to look for. I only have about 75 max inc shipping for speakers. I'm not expecting 2.1+ or an awesome system, just something for a casual listen to MP3's (96-192 usually).

Bookshelf speakers would my best option, I think...Something low maintenance.

Help is appreciated.

SOMETHING LIKE THIS: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...734342227&rd=1

Hopefully it will exceed my minisystem in my sig.

I just bought this:

The amp got a good review on 6moons... I'm hoping the speakers are decent. If not, I will be interested in what comes up in this thread.

You may like the small Infinity bookshelf speakers from the 80s and early 90s that are around. RS1001, RS125, RS2001 and RS2000 -there are one or two other models that are essentially the same from the images. The latter two have an 6" woofer rather than 4.5, but the closed heavy little cabinet and great tweeter are what do the trick. (I'd stay away from anything with home theater or 'surround' mentioned).

Are KLH and Fluance good speaker companies?

I found a KLH Bookshelf pair on ebay that had a 8" woofer, ?" midrange and ?" tweeter.

Gets confusing as 'RS' stands for "Reference Series" as well -larger than 8" cone bookshelf models being out of the price range mentioned. I wouldn't be afraid to try any Infinity bookshelf model that appeared to have a black or blond simulated wood cabinet and be from pre-'surround' times.

Interesting post!

I have a pair of Infinity RS5000s (they're BIG BIG brothers of the RS2000s) that I bought back in the mid-1980s. They are still my favorite speakers for home use. It has a 10 inch woofer, I think, a midrange driver and the emit tweeter. I've brought home several new speakers of varying price for audition over the years but have never heard enough of an improvement of the the RS5000s to make a new purchase worth it for me. I think they cost me about $500 way back when, after a long long search for high value-performance speakers.

By the way, does anyone have any impressions of the new Infinity Primus 150s to share? I'm interested in those as a living room (rather than listening room) speaker.

Sorry for the thread-jack. To add a pertinent comment, as I recall, the RS2000s sounded very nice but were a little on the lean bass / bright treble side compared to their big brothers.

If I only could spend $75, I would suggest the following:
1. Cambridge Soundworks. Check their website for closeouts or ebay for closeouts or used. There should probably be a few models in your price range. I have their Ensemble 4 in a cheap HT setup and it sounds ok for little money.
2. Realistic Minimus 7. These were sold by Radio Shack years ago and have a great reputation as a bargain little speaker. Usually available used and sometimes new on ebay. Don't know how they compare with what is currently sold by Radio Shack. My pair is around 14 yrs old and still works fine. These work good with the little Sonic Impact amp that is currently the rage.
As an aside, I have the amp and think it is overrated but worth $30.

Steve,

I hope RS5000s have a little more bass, given the 10" woofer relative to the 6.5 in. cone in the RS2000.

The problem is really with the shipping cost and space/arrangement of nice big old Infinitys. If that were not a problem, you could get something jaw dropping in a floor standing model for less than $300.

That 75 bucks MUST include shipping costs +/- 5-10 USD.

I saw one floorstanding speaker auction where the shipping itself was $120!
