Been using these forever since I bought them back in 2006, still going strong with them, but the headband has been snapped, and all the cushions (headband and ear pads) are practically flattened.  Finally decided they need some tune ups...here's the prob.

I paid $150 dollars + tax for them at J&R in NYC.
Sennheiser website want $150 dollars flat to request a repair to this model.

Is it worth it, or just flat out buy a new pair of headphones?

Are you willing to pay double than that for a hd600? If so, then do it. Keep in mind you might need an amp to pair with. Some people invest a lot on their gear and prefer to fix them. It's more up to you. From an economical point of view the upgrade option seems more promising...

Earpads are about $60 and the headband cushion is around $10, the frame I am not sure on for cost ($75?) and a new HD650 cable is another $13.  If you wanted you can swap in hd600 or 650 grills for maybe $35 more.  You can take it apart and repair yourself very easily actually.  I think the flat rate repair sounds reasonable if they refurb them completely.  Keep in mind if you sold a truly mint hd580, which is incredibly hard to find, I think you could fetch about $220-$250 for them from the right buyer.
