impedance for a mp3 player? After being repeatedly told that the sony v6 headphones are great, i think those are the ones my eyes are set on. The only reason i haven't ordered them already is because the impedance seems kinda high compared to the 32 ohm headphones that i usually see

Every headphone will benefit from an amp, but cans with impedances less than ~85 will be able to be driven by just about any portable; especially an iPod. So yes, you'll have no problem with volume with the V6's.

The Sony has a high sensitivity though.....106db/mw. Sensitivity determines how loud it will be over the headphone out. 32 ohm Grados tend to be about 100 db/mw: so much quieter then the V6.

does the 106db value mean that the headphones dont have a very high volume or that they get distorted at a very high volume setting?

sadly i'm going to need someone to explain to me this whole decibal thing. what does it mean?

I think normally a headphone should have a sensitivity of 97 db/mw or more. So 106 db/mw is pretty dang on loud! That means that say if you start off listening to a Grado at your perfered volume on the knob, then plug the Sony in at the same volume on the knob, it will be much louder.

The measure really is the amount of sound pressure over 1 milliwatt of power. Just to keep things easy, larger DBs mean louder headphone!
