Since that "other" thread seems to have been diverted away from discussing the review I'll post my thoughts here.

That was a very interesting read. As you can probably tell from my signature

I own the 4040 Signature System II. I did not make a comparison between the 3030 and 4040 and cannot comment on his conclusions. But I can say that I share his enthusiasm for the Stax system.

I noticed that he used the Analysis Plus Solo Crystal in part of his evaluation. So far, in my recent auditions that is the cable I have liked least. I think the Siltech 28-SQ G5 and the Synergistic Research Looking Glass Phase 1 Active are a better match in my system.

Gallaine,

I wonder if the cabling helped equalize the two units so that they sounded more alike?? Maybe with some better cabling his results might have been different?

That is certainly possible. Both the Siltech and the Synergistic Research cables allowed more details to reach my ears. I also felt that they conveyed a more realistic soundstage than the AP Solo Crystal.

It might also be the case that AP cables just aren't a good fit in my particular system. I've been reviewing cables in the $400-$500 range that have received very high praise. So, I can only surmise from my own experiences that system synergy plays a very large role in cabling.

My plan is to begin phase 2 auditioning with the next step up in the cable line for those cables I liked the most - and to include cable lines whose "entry" level cables are more expensive than $500 e.g. Shunyata Research Aries at $650.

I do want to mention that I felt the reviewer did an excellent job describing what I like most about the Stax - "The foremost qualitative impression of the STAX sound per se? One of extreme facility and effortlessness - as though the air moved by itself without any material intermediary."
