Friend of mine needs a new set of Earbuds because her iPod headphones blew up. She was going to get some earbuds from the Apple store but I told her not to waste her money on that crap.

...So what kind of earbuds can you get for <$50? NOT IEMs.

Ouch! Is she alright?

x2 on the Yuin Pk3.

Although I've never heard it, I have had the pk2 and pk1 and was not disappointed at the least.

For good sound, you're really better off with canalphones, because there are so many good ones now under $50. But if they are stuck on earbuds, then the best choice under $50 is the Senn MX-400/500, the 500 coming with the volume control. They will give a little bit more detail than the stock ipod buds for $25.

My Senn MX-400 still gets some use. Senn MX-400/500 would be a nice replacement/upgrade to the stock ipod earbuds, but Yuin earbuds might make better use of the budget.

Canal phones -- soft silicone tips chosen to fit her ear size, a more secure fit, no sound leakage out, a certain degree of blockage of noise trying to come in ... sounds like a win-win situation, to me. Even the modestly priced Creative EP630s (around $30 or maybe less online) are a step up from the bundled iBuds.

I was on an elevator at work today and a kid had the sound cranked up ridiculously loud on his player, and it sounded irritating to the others in the elevator (he was using earbuds, not canal phones ... you don't get that with canal phones, partly because you don't need to crank the volume so high).

Really -- try to talk her into the minimally invasive, gently inserted canal phones, for a step up. Even those earbuds that have good sound can fall out and allow sound leakage.

End of rant. Whatever she gets, I hope she enjoys listening to them.

I would suggest the JVC HA-FX33 (marshmallow); they are a good in ear bud when you apply the very simple kramer mod. I am quite surprised by mine, and they spank the pants of ibuds and even beat my sony ex71.

they are also really cheap to boot.

I'm getting the Crossroads X3 for myself, I'll let her give them a listen to see if she's fine with canalphones, otherwise I'll have her take a look at some Sennheisers, PK3, and the V-Modas.

The stupid thing is we went to the Apple Store and the iPod earbuds sell for $30!! I told her to let me get online and find a better quality pair for a little higher price.

I was with you until you mentioned "canal phones".
