gmail is an e-mail account by google with 2gigs.
If you have a gmail account and use it then you'll get invites to invite other people to get a gmail account. If you want a gmail acccount just PM 3 random headfiers and tell them your current e-mail address and ask if they can give you a gmail invite. And I'm sure that at least one of them is able to sent you an invite.

I think Gmail is still in the beta stage because this way, google's ads dont cause legal trouble [the big G uses the same methods to scan your g-mail page for aimed advertisement as it does other webpages]. The fact that allmost everybody has 50 invites kinda makes it easy for anybody to get in.

Actually, they are keeping it in Beta stage because they feel it isn't perfected yet.

the GMail team adds features quite often and adds performance increases every once in a while as well. I suppose that when they feel they have perfected the system (I mean, I STILL DO get a bug every once in a while where I wasn't able to receive an email for no reason whatsoever - rare, but it still happens).
