Except the mdr-v6, wich begins to be a bit hard to find at correct prices, what can I get ?

For example what worth the :

Audio-Technica ath-d40fs ?
Audio-Technica ath-m30 ?
Denon AHD-550 ?
Eggo D22sl ?

The Denon already received some nice reviews here and on headwize ("They are sort of like a closed version of the SR60 with better bass and less of a treble boost." according to Delenda est Carthago, ooh sorry, Sony)

The m40fs is it better than the d40fs ? The price is far higher on ebay.

Thanks

00940-

Save up a bit and go for the Senn HD 280 Pro. I have 2 MDR-V6's which are great for deep bass, but a bit harsh at the high end & lacking a bit in mids. Wife demands I use closed cans (mostly). I heard the 280's at a local high-end audio shop- Most impressive, but they wanted $164!!!!! I ordered from the net at substantial savings. Newwegg.com has (had???) these cans at $65 inc. s/h. Anyway, the 280's are much more well-balanced than the V-6 for all but the most dedicated bass-heads. Best (reasonably priced) closed cans I've ever heard.

Good luck!

I've tried the ATH-M30 and M40, as well as the Senn 280 and Sony 7506/v6.

I prefer the M30 to the M40. The M30 is not the most detailed or refine set of cans out there, but the sound is generally warm, pleasant, and non-fatiguing. I find the M40 to be sort of distant and flat sounding. The Senn 280 is indeed on another level from the AT's, but so far I'm finding it too bright for long term listening (I say so far because I've only had it about a week, and it is said to improve with use). I guess on the whole I like the Sony's the best.

Why not go with the Grado SR-60 unit for about $70 from HeadRoom?? Excellent performer without an amp, and many here love them.

I own both the ATH-D40fs and the HD 280 Pro. The D40fs is supposed to be "bass enhanced" but there doesn't seem to be TOO much bass (and I am listening with more than adequate 400mW of power). I may be purchasing a pair of Sony V6s soon so I can do a full comparison, but the D40fs certainly doesn't have the treble spikyness associated with the V6. If I had to choose between the D40fs and HD 280 Pro I would go with the Audio-Technica because it's a lot more comfortable due to less pressure exerted on the earcups and on the top of your head.

If the Denons sound like something for you I'd say save up for the 750 instead. Tighter and deeper bass with better highs is what you'll get for the extra cash you put out. The 550 are pretty good though and more portable if that's what you're looking for.
