I have recently joined the band at my church, playing the bass. I initially auditioned with a 4-string and the Sony MDR-7506's I have plugged into the Avom did just fine for it. Due to some complications with my 4-string though, I made a quick purchase of a 5-string. It's the same exact bass and the same amp, mixer, and headphones as before. The problem though is that I am taking advantage of the low B string, because why not?
As I play by myself, nothing else coming through the headphones, my channel on the Avom at full heat, I have no problem whatsoever. The Sony's even try to rumble off my head when I get down to the sub-41Hz range that the B-string gives me (roughly 31Hz open).
When the band (or music track) comes in, as long as it's light, I still do alright and can hear my own things. But if the band picks it up and we get really jammin', their signals get hotter and drown out my own.
Now, I know it's not the Avom that's at fault here. I have the same exact issue at home running my Peavy Combo 115's line out into an input on my Mackie ProFx12v2, line out from my computer into another couple channels, and the same Sony headphones fed by the "Phone" jack.
I've posed this scenario to a few friends and have had reccomendations and even have been loaned some other cans to try. Those include the Sennheiser Momentums and the AKG K240 Studios. The K240 did better than the others, but still suffered a bit. Plus, since I'm going to be on stage with these, I would prefer something close backed.
One of the recommendations I've seen is the beyerdynamic DT770. I know very little about these, but based on the demo I played with at Guitar Center, I know they need more power, so if I get them I might need a headphone amp as well.
I bring this here to see if y'all have any other recommendations, or maybe can provide me your theories on why this is happening so that I can compare with my own theory.
Thanks!
