Now I know that the headphone jack amp on the 6thgen ipod is supposed to be inferior to the 5.5 gen, but I was in the process of getting an ALO line out, se530s and portable amp for my 5.5(have the headphones so far, amp on order). Should I look for a 5.5 gen or will the line out quality be the same since I won't be using the headphone jack on the player itself anyway.

To my ears, the difference in headphone out quality between the 5.5 gen and the 6th gen is absolutely and completely indiscernable. They couldn't sound more identical to me. To answer your question, the line out should sound exactly the same since you are bypassing the iPods internal amp and going straight to an external. Get the 6th gen.

I don't have a 6G Classic, so I should get that diisclaimer out front but I do know that the DACs in the Classic are not the Wolfson DAC in the 5.5G, which means there should be some differences between the two players, whether the differences are discernable is a totally different story.

I do remember reading Vinnie's comparison's of them and the iMods and him saying

"5G/5.5G iMod with ALO Vcap Dock > 5G/5.5G iMod with ALO dock cable (black gates) > stock 6G line out > stock 5G/5.5G line out"

So from that I would sumise that if you don't have any desire for to get your iPod iMod'd than getting the 6G will have a better sounding line out than the 5.5G...is it that noticeable will be up to your ears to find out. So if you can take your 5.5G and go test a 6G somewhere to compare will be the easiest way to find out for yourself which you prefer. Good Luck and I'm sure either way you go you'll be happy.
