waht would be the difference for my grado's? and why do non of the DIY amp makers around here offer anything above the el 2002? even tangent doesn't offer anything above the el 2002.
The el2008/9 are no longer in production. Though they do pop up every once in awhile. If you were aquire the el2009, you would only need 2, 1 for each channel. If your Meta is battery powered, it's not recommended due to high curent draw. Is it better than the el2001/2? IMO, yes.
Yes, the EL2009 are seriously better for a number of reasons; a single EL2009 has 1/10th the open-loop output impedance compared to a single EL2001 (by stacking the EL2001s you divide the output impedance by the number of EL2001s stacked, so that a stack of 4 EL2001s has 1/4th the output impedance of 1 EL2001) and they have CONSIDERABLY more current handling ability (they can source 1 AMP of current continuously and peak at 1.9A; a single EL2001 can source 1/10th of that (0.1A)). Over the EL2001 the EL2009 are also quite a bit faster; the EL2002 are similar in speed to the EL2009 but don't have the impedance nor the current capability.
The reason nobody offers EL2008 or EL2009 buffers on an amp is because they're quite rare and expensive; they were discontinued quite a while ago and nowdays it's reasonable to pay $20-$40 EACH for a buffer (you need at least 2). They also need to be heatsinked, which adds cost and complexity.
do that ...its sounds amazing ...had a chance to listen to the latest ppa that phil brought in the recent mini-meet ...its liquid smooth ....no distortion whatsoever ....incredible....way cleaner than my meta42 i had brought with me ...btw got to hand it to phil for being such a nice guy, definitely looking forward to future amps from the amp master. ...he and larry who hosted it ....put a nice little bass boost on my amp ...looks slick ...and sounds great too....thx phil....
