hi guys

up to now i had a set of ad700+some average usb dac/amp.
i'm looking for upgrade options.
already got here the amb gamma 1 and the gamma 2 is on its way and of course i'll choose an amp later.

up to now i aimed mainly at the ad900 from the great things i've heard+ my liking of the ad700.

i mainly listen to zeppelin, floyd, classic, some metallice and blues.

the main requirement is that they will have low impedance and/or are easily driven.
the reasen for that is that they will be on the go with me half the time and i'd like to enjoy them with a simple Portable amp. i don't want to be dragged to so meny expenses. the 800+$ i plan to spend is already a stretch.

Given all these requirements in addition to my willingness to purchase second-hand, what are my options?

I have the AD700 and they are great cans. I heard the AD900 and I don't think they are good for the $$. There is a noticiable improvement especially in the bass area but not to make up for the price difference.

If I were you, I would go for the Grado 325is.

At the NJ Micro Meet the AD700s fared very well on this type of music against more expensive alternatives. For use with portable amps on the go, as you say, I don't think spending $400 on headphones will get you much improvement.

i don't like the grado sound Signature.
my budget for a portable amp is arround 100-150$
at home i'll have a good amp so that's no problem.

what about other options?

For rock there are two options: Grado RS1 used and ATH-D2000.
Known to do rock exceptionally well, both kings of rock.

Get Grado RS1 used and ATH-D2000 now on sale for $499 at amazon and other sellers.

How about a D5000 or Pro 750/900?

well about the grados. heard the sr80 & sr125 and liked the ad700 more and from what i understood up to some level the sound sig is about the same.
about the d5000 i heard very good things but they are quite heavy. I ponder about them.
up to now hed no contact with any ultrasone phones. how are they?

any other options or opinions?

D5000 is not great for rock, nor for classic. sound is very thick and heavy, you need something more airy and punchy highs rather than punchy lows and very tight mids like D5000.

because the AD700 is very mid coloured.

the AD700's are very not portable at all!!
Ultrasones are an definite option in this range. Portable, good with those genres....

and i am aware of that and and now i use simple iem's.
considered the ad900 mainly because then i'll have 150$~ for a portable set although it's not my first option. i'd rathed have 1 pair of great cans.

so i'll start digging deep into ultrasone territory.

Look at the Ultrasone PRO 750 and PRO 900 as Palpatine suggested. No idea why you do not like the Grado sound sig. They are some of the most favored cans for the genre's listed. I listen to Metallica with my Ultrasone's, the bass is really, really nice
