3rd Annual Wicked Schiit Meet -Impression Thread
Jan 18, 2023 at 12:26 AM Post #16 of 21
First off a huge thanks to @gc335 for organizing everything and for @Jason Stoddard and Schiit Audio for sponsoring the event and sending out some of their new equipment. Thanks to everyone who came out, especially those who hauled all their personal equipment there. Everyone's willingness to share so much high end equipment for others to experience is what makes this event so amazing.

Some highlights from the event:

My main goals were to listen to the Caldera and Atrium so I spent the most time A-B-Cing those two along with my Auteur Classics on my personal equipment. The Atrium is so lush and natural sounding, very laid back yet still very detailed. Fortunately it didn't ruin the Auteur Classic (my favorite all-a-rounder) for me, phew! I REALLY enjoyed the Caldera! Really well balanced sound with incredible detail- I think I want these! Big thanks to @cangle and @Ishcabible for letting me spend some time with these two headphones!

Hearing the Mojo2 and the M17 was also a big highlight. While the colored bubbles are a little confusing with no instructions, the sound is phenomenal on the Mojo2. It has so much power and and a unique and appealing sound signature. The Mojo sounds so different, and probably better than any of the portable chi-fi equipment I have owned. The M17 is ginormous but is basically a desktop dac/amp you can take on the go. It has more power than you will ever need. In short, they both made my Dunu SA6 Ultras sound like headphones instead of IEMs.

Thank you @ConnorG for encouraging be to listen to his vintage Sennheiser HD540 Reference Gold headphones out of one of his old speaker amps. What a smooth and laid back, yet still very high end sound.

I was set up next to Ryan from Modhouse Audio and he let me listen to his prototype planar headphones. I was really impressed with what he has achieved with this headphone he has produced from the ground up. I was enjoying my music not just listening to the headphone. I look forward to seeing what the final result look and sounds like.

Huge thanks to @DeweyCH for letting me take his Susvara for a spin on my equipment. While I know my amps may not have rung everything out of the headphone I really enjoyed this listen. The tuning is right up my alley and they just disappear on your head. Maybe someday...

This was my face most of the day

One of my biggest takeaways was leaving still absolutely loving my Auteur Classic/HA-3A pairing. The NOS tubes have really taken this amp to the next level.

The HA-3A got quite a bit of use throughout the day

Very solid showing of equipment, wish I was there!

Would be a great excuse to finally discover Boston & its surroundings as well.

Might even go watch a Bruins game even if they're my team's arch-rivals hehe :beerchug:

You’ve always got a spot on the couch at my place :L3000:

I forgot to take more than two pictures but I have some highlights:

@cangle brought most of the gear I’ve wanted to hear—the MC1 brought back memories of my M1SE and had me momentarily wish I kept it. His LCD-24 reminded me a lot of the MM500 but less dull and I’m glad I got to try his Expanse with familiar as well. The Folkvangr was a really neat piece of gear too; the OTL sound really does things differently from my own OTC amp.

The M17 in person is bigger than I thought it would be from pictures. It sounds great though, better than a lot of desktop setups I’ve heard. I kind of want one now…but this might be overkill for walking my dog.

@DeweyCH’s prototypes were really exciting to hear—both were too lean for me but knowing what drivers it used, I’m excited to see where this project goes. His Rognir Closed headphones were the biggest shock to me. I really expected them to sound like every other closed planar: giant low mid dip and hyped center midrange but this actually sounded rather coherent. Too rich for my blood for this purpose but I’m glad someone’s nailed the closed planar sound.

@Tulon’s prototypes were a bit further along and we had great conversation—Ryan’s a great dude which alone makes me want to support him. I’ve also never heard the Soekris 2541 and if I ever want an AIO, that might be the way I’ll go.

I’ve had a mini meet with @ConnorG in the past and his gear is always sobering; the stuff that was good in the past is still just as good today, maybe even better, relatively, if we consider just how expensive things have gotten… I’ve heard his 540G with my own setup and felt it leaned a little dry for me but I really liked it out of his Sony integrated.

The last setup I heard was @wizzman121’s HA3 and Auteur which was a nice, calm way to end the day. Amazing how that combo cost less than one Caldera.

The Schiit stacks were nice to hear too, thanks so much to Schiit for sponsoring this awesome meet! I don’t like recommending things I haven’t heard but the “simple” Magni/Modi stack really is enough for most people. More than enough, even. I forgot to try Mimby2 though, bummer.

Can’t wait for the next one! I’ll remember to bring my tubes next time so people can actually use the amp…

@wizzman121 Sweet Guster shirt! I’ve been a fan of theirs for over 20 years at this point. I also enjoyed reading all your impressions from the meet.
