I just got a new (used) iRiver h140, installed Rockbox on it, and thought I'd see how it stacked up against the 3G iPod and 1G iPod shuffle I already owned. After browsing around a bit I decided running them through RightMark Audio Analyzer was the only way the tests would be useful to anyone else. I wanted to see the frequency response under load, so I hooked each player's output to a Y-splitter, from which one lead ran to my Sony MDR-V6 phones (63 Ohms) and the other into an M-Audio transit on my iBook.
Long story short: the Shuffle was a touch better than the iRiver and far better than the 3G iPod. The most easily audible difference to me: the 3G iPod has a dramatically lower bass response under load than the other two. For anyone who'd like to see the details I've attached the graphs (sans the noise level - 5 image upload limit!).
Might we set up a thread where people can post or link to their various RMAA results? There doesn't seem to be one established yet.
