I will be getting my Sensaphonics 2x-s earphones next week to use with my 5th generation iPod. I was thinking about buying a portable amp to use while I am outside the home and also buying Grado headphones (HF-1 or RS-1) to use with the same amp when at home. Does this make sense?

1. Will a portable amp make a difference with the iPod and the Sensaphonics 2x-s earphones and does it make sense buying one?

2. How good will the sound quality be with the Grado headphones and an iPod? Does anyone do this?

3. Can you properly drive the Grado headphones with a portable amp?

Thanks for all your help !!

2. A grado will sound fine with the ipod as source. But RS-1 is overkill. I'd go for a cheaper grado/alessandro if I were to use the ipod as source.

3. Grados are pretty easy to drive. A simple portable amp will do just fine.

The Sensa's are perfectly fine out of the ipod, but a good amp will add a whole new layer of qualities onto the music. Learn your new headphones for a bit, but with your level of headgear, an amp makes sense.
