Been reading here like an addict & I'd welcome some opinions!
I started with:

MS1's
Porta Corda II
E4c's

I just bought some HD580's & now my MS1's don't sound so good to me. I loved them when I first got them & only got the Senns to compliment w/classical & jazz. I also moved an old amp to my headphone area & it sounds really nice. And the e4c's work just great unamped from my h120 so my portable rig is fine.

So I'm thinking of selling the porta corda & the MS1's (w/beta pads) and possibly try the MS2's. I'm trying to decide if my new dissatisfaction w/the MS1's is because I like the Senn sound better - or if I've just outclassed the MS1's & need to move up the line to the MS2's to really enjoy both phones & both sound signatures.

I listen to a wide variety of music - thus my thoughts of having 2 different cans.

Please offer suggestions......

I tried the MS1's. They sounded pretty good, but weren't comfortable for me. I tried the MS2's and I decided I like the sound of Sennheiser more.

I like the sound of the MS2, but I vastly prefer my HD580... not so much for the sound, but for the comfort. Can you say, sandpaper on the ears?

I got a couple of pairs of the yellow Senn pads, so I'll see if they help. If not, I'm seriously considering selling the MS2. It just doesn't make sense to keep them, if I can't enjoy them for more than 30 min at a time.

thats why I bought the beta pads for the MS1's - but a funny thing - last night I was comparing both pairs & discovered that when I eq'd the MS1's to sound the best to my tastes - with the beta pads on - they sounded an awful lot like the 580's!!! Thats what makes me wonder if I'm just going to like the Senn sound better no matter what.

Another thought is to sell the amp & MS1's & send the 580's to Larry for some mods - maybe some wood & a new cable?????? What do you think of that idea??

the 580 ain't that far from the hd650. I enjoyed it very much, as much as my hd650. And sometimes even more (more treble energy and airyness on the 580)

So should I go for the 580 mods - woody & cable or for the MS2's to compliment to 580's????

I have a pair of senn 580s

and my next pair of cans will be the Grado 325i I do believe. I love the sound of my Grado sr60s so the 325i should be better and a nice complement to the 580s.

Thanks for the suggestions!! I'm going to be in Portland in a week or so ....so I guess I will find some places to listen to a variety of cans. There just shouldn't be so many choices!

Hello,
What was your choices ? after 6 months ?
Did you go for a 580 woody ?

I am looking for 580s myself ( I have the px100 right now ) and a small PA2V2 amp is on its way.

Well, I bought sr325 with the same idea. It didn't work though and I finished listening to sr325 exclusively. Is it natural to try to compare the sound right after listening started? Not listening to the music, but thinking of what is missing here and there? There is no common ground for comparison as these two are so different.

DT880 on the other hand compements any of them far better making switch possible.

We can even introduce complementary ratio (CR) in between different phones.
Let's say CR(dt880/sr325) is greater than CR(sr325i/hd580).

I'm considering getting some DT880s down the line. It says they're 'semi-open', whats does this mean? Like in comparison to my 580s would be helpful...
