I agree with all points, except for the sibilance bit. My experience is the opposite. I am completely fine with the treble on the HD800S, but I had to use the Loki Mini to tame the treble of the ADX5000.

But I agree that despite a smaller soundstage, the overall SQ is nicer.
Interesting. Maybe sibilants issue is depending on the tracks you listen. I have a list of “sibilant prone” tracks in my library. HD800S had sibilants on 90% of them. ADX5000 had only 10%. I guess these 10% are just how they are recorded.
Another note is that even when there is sibilance, I can tolerate it on ADX5000, while it was unbearable with HD800S. Maybe fuller mid is helping this or amount of sibilance is lower with ADX5000. Anyway I’m happy. Of course, YMMV.

I had written this headphone off until reading your impressions. I also found the D8000 too warm and dark. I also love the HD800S but also found it sibilant at times and it’s sub bass is almost non-existent. I also found its mids slightly recessed, which I don’t like. I think we have similar tastes in sound. I’m looking forward to more impressions from you.
I remember reading your journey on the D8000 thread. According to your comments there, I do believe that ADX5000 may be a great match for you. I suggest auditioning them.

The differing opinions on whether the HD800S or ADX5000 is more sibilant are interesting. Are there any objective measurements of the ADX5000 available? I was unable to find any via Google.

I'm debating either buying a HD800S again or trying the ADX5000 if I don't end up liking the Auteur. Might not have it for another month or so. When I originally had the HD800S I used it with a NFB28 and then a Bimby + Valhalla 2. At times I thought the bass could use a little more weight and that the treble could be a bit harsh. Now that I have an Onyx + Kenzie Encore I think my setup likely will have better synergy with the HD800S for my preferences and potentially the ADX5000 too. Particularly through the 300ohm tap which is surprisingly excellent.

I thought there were going to cost like 3 grand.
The official retail price is $1999. At some FLHS (friendly local headphone store), they may give you 10+% discount.

After 30+ hours burn-in. Sounds wonderful on "Maleficent (Original Soundtrack)". Great bass impact with near perfect balance and dynamics. Love these cans.
Only problem is the occasional creak from the place where the housing is held by the hanger. I know some people complained about it. It is indeed annoying but the sound signature is so perfect to my liking that I can tolerate with it (frequency is not so high anyway).

If you had to compare the tuning to another existing headphone, what is the closest sound signature?

Probably the closest is HD800S. But as I described HD800S is leaner and has weaker bass and sub-bass performance. Maybe HD800S + D8000 / 2.

About spot on comparison.
