If you're a college student and are buying a Powerbook or iBook with a combo drive or better, you can get a $200 mail-in rebate on an iPod. It only applies if you're ordering between July 7th and September 31st. It gets better, too; you get $200 off the already low education prices for iPods. You can get a 4g 20 gig iPod for $69.

I'm a rising college freshman and ordered a Powerbook... but guess what day? July 6th. I tried calling 'em just to be sure and I definitely missed it by just one day

Yeah, I saw that pretty awesome deal. I personally wouldn't want a mac laptop, but my girlfriend wants one since she works in the editing world, which is supposedly very mac dominated. The unfortunate part is that she would want that deal for herself, so I wouldn't be able to convince her to get the laptop just so I could get the iPod.

What kind of "proof" do they need for that student deal? I just graduated from undergrad, but will be taking a year off before grad school... think they would still give someone like me a student discount?

yeah, my brother in law ordered a powerbook the week before the gen4 ipods came out, so he got a 15 gig 3rd gen ipod for 69... he called about gen4 ipods and they said he could trade his 15 gig in but he'd have to pay a restocking fee, otherwise they could give him a 50 credit. So yeah-- 15 gig 3rd gen iPod: $19, hehe. How's that for dirt cheap.

How's this:

My sister ordered an iBook + 20GB iPod (3G) the week before the 4G iPod was announced. Monday morning (when they announced the 4G), she gets an email from Apple saying they went ahead and switched her iPod to the 40GB (4G) model at no extra cost. My sister calls them back to make sure she still gets the $200 rebate, and they tell her "yes", so she's pretty happy.

Well, later that day, she receives another email from Apple, telling her that since the new 40GB iPod does not come with a wired remote or carry case (her original order for the 20GB iPod included them), Apple is sending her the wired remote and carry case for FREE! That's a $70 value!

I gotta say it really doesn't bother me that much, I mean, I did get a kickass computer either way. And I already have a first gen 5 gig iPod which I've kept in perfect condition, no scratches and it still gets 10 hours of battery life. The main reason I really want a 4g though is just to hear the improved sound quality. And the bigger battery is nice, too...

Do y'all think it's worth it to try calling again? Maybe someone at Apple could have some sympathy although as a company they're known as a bunch of notorious hardasses. I didn't know I was just a day too early when I called the first time, and they didn't bother to tell me, either; they just said "no." I checked the fine print on the coupon myself. Maybe if I'm reallly, really vague when I call them they'll feel bad having to let me down after they ask when it was ordered

What do you all think?
