If you want some good portable, on ear headphones, the Beyerdynamic DT-1350 are very nice. Innerfidelity also posted a great review of the new Onkyo ES-FC300 and ES-HF300--haven't heard those yet. Getting a pair by UPS tomorrow

I second the DT1350 recommendation.

DT 1350s are fine with rock. I liked them a lot, but decided that I wasn't going to travel enough to justify keeping them.

If you are a big rock music fan, with a $300 budget, you could get the DT1350s and then also try a pair of Grado SR80i for home use when you don't need isolation (they are open headphones). Grados are FUN for rock :)

BTW: both of these headphones are easy to drive and wouldn't need an amp.

for $300 or less, try HF300 + Fiio E12 or Audio Technica ATH-WS99 + Fiio E12.

I recommend ATH-WS99 and have to admit it gives a lot of fun to my ears even comparing to my KEF M500 which imo is the best sounding headphones in the price range.

If you wanted to stay within your original budget with a portable, I just got the Onkyo ES-FC300 I mentioned above. Definitely a good portable headphone for $150 and sound very good with rock.
