You should consider the Sein hd598. GREAT sounds stage that is perfect for gaming. The bass is nice and tight also which lends itself well to gaming.

That fits my budget well. How does it sound for both games and music? I plan on investing in a ~500$ audiophile phone in the future for music but the current priority is gaming.

Would I need an amp to power it?

Another option to consider is the big brother of the popular Audio Technica AD700, namely AD900.

For a lot of info concerning gaming headphones, check Mad Lust Envy's thread on the subject.

A bonus of the hd598 is that it doesn't need much amp. I owned it for about six months and played a lot of COD with it. Sometimes I'd play on the d2k but the bass was just too much.

Music is pretty good on the 598 if you like a neutral hp with good detail. Most comfy hp's that I've ever owned.

If you want a little thicker/punchier sound than the HD598 and AD900, look into the Q701.
