I recently bought the Philips SBA1500 "Portable Speaker System" to use with my laptop. It cost about $20 at the local Target. The system consists of an amplifier powered by 3 AAA batteries and a pair of small speakers.

The parts connect by standard headphone jacks. I brought the amplifier part to work today and plugged it into my mAudio Sonica soundcard, and plugged my HD580s into it.

The results: it doesn't sound half bad. A little light on the bass perhaps, but certainly enjoyable.

They are of course available on Amazon:

My first headphone amp years ago was a Sony with graphic equalizer built-in. I got it for about $20 and it lasted about 5 years and dies, and Sony no longer made them.

More recenlty I bought a RadioShack 3 headphone amplifier, and it did a decent job as well, for about $20. Finally, I was looking for something like the old sony and found head-fi.org

$2,500 dollars later, I must say

"Welcome to head-fi, and sorry about your wallet"

Hey, I was posting based on your post-count of 12 posts. Just noticed you registered Jan 2006.

How did you manage to be here almost 2 years and only spend $20
